First thread/post in this section - Had new meter fitted earlier in year after inheriting a day and night meter which was read the wrong way round for the first 18 after we moved in (Muppets). changed tariff at same time.

Anyway - just rec'd a letter stating meter faulty - checked it and no numbers displayed on the meter. Coming to fit new one soon.

What is the protocol for billing usage on occasions like this - inclined to press for bill to be scrapped.

You won't be able to insist on that. You will have to estimate on the basis of previous confirmed bills.

However, keep everything in writing because as I expect that you realise, even though it is your fault - you will most likely be treated as a shirker and as someone who is just trying to pull a fast one and avoid your bills.

You need to react assertively to anything that seems unreasonable to you.

cheers BankFodder - got them to write off the bill when they transposed the readings on the day/night meters.

As you state will keep everything in writing - not sure how you can say it is my fault - their new meter fitted - obviously faulty but presume it is cheaper for them to wait til next meter reading rather than send someone round in good time to see if working.

Over the phone to OH suggested we use one months usage on replaced meter to estimate bill.

Your previous meter was presumably working even if being read incorrectly. I would use that as the basis of estimating the amount used.

If you use one month of the new meter it would give an extremely high reading - its December, and we are now heading for the longest and coldest days of the year. Perhaps you should wait until June/July to get 1 months usage to estimate for 12 months!
