My friends laptop had several infected files and I have managed to clear them using Malware Bytes, and Avast. But I thought I would do a chkdsk c: /f /v /r to make sure everything is ok. On booting up I get the message 'autochk program not found - skipping autochk' Therefore there is no scan done. The laptop seems to be working fine otherwise, but this message pops up on every startup now.

Any ideas?

Obviously, the virus has corrupted certain files.

ps. System restore doesn't work either, even though there are restore points available.

pps. I hate Windows 8

If all else fails, kick them where it hurts and SOD'EM;)

I managed to do a sfc /scannow and it did find errors. It said they could not be fixed until the next restart. When I restart, I get the same message 'autochk program not found - skipping AUTOCHECK'. There is a million and one solutions on Google, none of them work.

Most of the sites seem to recommend putting in the Win 8 disc and trying a repair, although I cant recall whether 8 has this option or whether its just 7.

Autochk.exe should be residing in C:\windows\system32.

I get this error on my Media Center PC (win7) but just ignore it. It doesn't pop up everytime though, only when I ask it to do a disk check, if it pops up on every boot, there may well be a problem with the HD.

Well, 3 possible solutions:

Reboot 3x on this screen:

UfAQj.png

it should take you to an automatic repair / system restore mode

At the start screen Press the Windows key + C, type "reinstall windows" (without the quotes) in the search. On the right side click settings and follow the reinstall windows process

Upgrade it to 8.1 (if all updates for 8 are in place you can get that from store)

If in doubt, contact a qualified insured legal professional (or my wife... she knows EVERYTHING)

Or send a cheque or postal order payable to Reclaim the Right Ltd.
