Hi,

bought a used car (53 plate) for 2K not even 4 weeks ago (MOT till end of Oct 2013).

The car was sold stating that everything apart a minor dent in the body was in good working condition.

Roughly two weeks after purchase the engine light came on and I got a mechanic to look at it and he said to me the cost of repair (material + labor) is not worth the car.

I went to another mechanic the week after and had the car checked again.

Today I got the results stating that the repair will be 600 GBP and a MOT test failed with various reasons.

The mechanic told me to scrap the car as it is not worth the money anymore to repair all the faults.

Should I just scrap it or can I invoke SOGA to get a refund ?

If it was a dealer, invoke soga. You must give him the opportunity to repair first within a reasonable timeframe. All this should be done out of HIS pocket. Not yours.

If you have the mechanics report that says it is not economically viable to repair, then get a copy to the dealer and demand a refund. If he doesnt refund you within 7 days of receipt of that letter, head down to Small claims court.

You may also want to inform trading standards too.

Any advice i give is my own and is based solely on personal experience. If in any doubt about a situation , please contact a certified legal representative or debt counsellor..
