npower says it is not at fault and Mr Rust gave 'conflicting information'

A family has been left without power after they received a surprise electricity bill for £64,000.

Terry and Tracey Rust and their three children are living by candlelight as they claim they cannot afford to pay the massive bill for power at their farmhouse.

The couple have been landed with the bill after they made a mistake when giving the power supplier details of their meter.

In the block of flats were we used to live, Npower sent a gas bill of £22,000 to one of the elderly tenants. The problem was she did not have a gas supply connected although there was a gas point outside. When she disputed it, they started sending demand letters and would not listen to her. They dropped it when the newspapers got involved.

They even tried it on with us and were billing us gas consumption for a flat the other side of the complex. Even the meter serial numbers were mixed up. We weren't even registered with Npower for gas! Took about 3 months to resolve and only because eventually I wrote to them. Npower have to be the leading light when it comes to incompetence!

However in this case it seems that a lot of blame should be attached to the householder as they should have wondered why there were no electric bills for their farm as no bills would be sent for a prepayment meter.
