Question re going self employed making products

wondering if someone can help -

Have been trawling through the internet looking for an answer but cannot find one so thought I would try here.

 

I have been a hobbyist making items for friends and family and thinking about gong self employed with it.

 

My product was inspired by a product already available but is made using different materials and methods .... am I allowed to do this?
