why is this section called bear garden?

Basically - anything goes......within reason!

 

One suggestion:-

 

Bear Garden

 

Meaning:

A state of near chaos, turmoil and confusion in a room or some other similar situation (i.e. a particularly noisy and crowded pub).

 

Origin:

This phrase comes from the time of Henry VIII when bear baiting was popular, so much so that gardens were actually set aside for the "sport". They were, of course, very noisy and rowdy places.

That took some searching, but I knew i had saved that post somewhere for a reason!

Bear Garden is used to describe a place where noisy riotous behaviour goes on - and is permitted.

 

What you may not know is that there is an area in the Royal Courts of Justice in the Strand which is actually called The Bear Garden. It is the place where for 150 years it has been used as an area where opponents - lawyers and clients would meet each other and negotiate last minute settlements before going in for the trial. I can imagine that it got pretty heated and pretty noisy. It s still used for meetings but I can imagine that it is much calmer nowadays."

The Bear Garden is the area adjacent to the rooms of the Masters of the High Court. Lawyers often gather here to consider or discuss last-minute issues prior to appointments. In days gone by papers were lowered down to the lawyers in baskets from a gallery above. One day Queen Victoria visited the court and hearing the noisy area she remarked that it sounded like a garden full of bears.
