I cant believe Im about to say this, but I actually agree with this cut. I see no reason for people on 50k+ to be on child benefit at all. There shouldnt be a tapering system in place between 50-60k (which is, I assume whats confusing matters) it should just stop if you earn over 50k.

I heard one report that any savings made by filtering out the higher earners, would be swallowed up in processing !

This would be far too easy for them.

True - simple solutions seem beyond them. Also by using the tax credits system, they could have set a joint income level to make things fairer, instead of what they have now, which is idiotic.

I seem to remember when this was announced a few years ago (?) some were moaning that because they were earning £60k as a single person, they'd miss out. But a couple with a joint income of £60k wouldn't. The original plan was that people on the higher rate tax would miss out.

No, a single parent, or couple with one parent working earning 60K would miss out, but a couple with two parents working earning 99.5k split equally between them, would get full child benefit.

  • 4 weeks later...
An easier way would have been to have merged child benefit with child tax credit, which already assesses income.

The only problem with that some people who earn over 50k cant get tax credit so they wont know about the ones that doesn't apply for it

Also I am one of the people who will be loosing my child benefit, I have no problem with giving it up but I think it should go on told household income.

What some people don't understand is we pay 40% tax also:)

so in my case ( a stay at home mum) my children get punished for their father doing well in life what type of lmessage does this send out to our children ?

There was something in the daily mail about this last week. There was someone earning £7k a month moaning she needs her child benefit. I'm sorry; but if you earn that amount and need child benefit, you should really learn to budget better. I receive less than that per year.

Cameron didn't need the DLA for his son did he? But it didn't stop him claiming it, wealthy pensioners still accept the freedom pass, it's greed pure and simple.
