Has anyone had any reply or dealings with Alliance & Leicester over excess bank charges.

Sent my letter.

They have until Wednesday to reply to me,

just noted they have charged me £25 for going £4.99 over my authorised overdraft for 24 hours.

aaarrrrrrgggggggg

Come on, that's only about a pound an hour. Much less than the minimum wage

I didn't write to A&L - I find the best approach with these excessive charges (with all banks) is to get your complaint registered by phone initially, because sometimes they will listen to a reasoned argument (although you may need to be very forceful, bordering on the stroppy)... but it depends very much on the particular circumstances (the stronger your 'moral' case, the better). Otherwise they may try to just hide behind (often unfair) Ts & Cs. I usually only resort to writing (due to time & cost) if they consistently refuse to refund, or if they insist I must write anyway.

In your case, if they don't cave-in to your letter, the next best option may be to threaten to escalate the dispute by referral to the FSA (sometimes works). Failing that use the 'not appropriate charge for the costs involved' route, but that may be a lengthy process.

Always unfair

I'm sorry but I find that this advice is far too moderate. It wastes time and follows conventional channels of complaint which the banks are well accustomed to and which does not bother them.

By all means use the FSA etc to complain about the general principle of the banks charging regime. Nothing will happen, of course. But Miss T wants her money back. It is hers as the banks have done nothing to show otherwise. A courts service exists which has been paid for out of Miss T's taxes. She should use Her Court Service to recover Her Money.

Therefore "In your case, if they don't cave-in to your letter, the next best option [is] to threaten to escalate the dispute by referral to the" County Court .

Well calculated back 6 years exactly, they owe me £1600.

As I said letter went last week so gonna hold out til the weekend and if i recieve no reply gonna get the ball rolling at court.

Dont think ringing the bank is going to work, rang about the incident last week. went £4.99 over for 24 hours, was fobbed off, said I needed to write in, so I have done as they asked but not just for the £25 charge.

Well. I sent off the initial letter (from the BAG library) to A&L on 7th February demanding that they refund all my charges for the last 6 years etc.

Exactly 7 days later (14th Feburary - my only Valentine  ) I received a reply that said:

______________

Dear PJ...(or words to that effect)

I am writing in response to your recent communication and was very sorry to learn of your disappointment with the service you have received.

Thank you for taking the time to highlight your concerns, we are currently looking into the situation and will be writing to you with a more detailed response.

In the meantime, I am enclosing a leaflet which explains the steps we will take to handle your complaint.

Yours sincerely

Hmm.... let's see how we go from here. I'm not letting this one go.

Just one question: Should I start legal proceedings now, or wait until they get back to me?

I will, of course, keep you all posted.

After finding this excellent site last night, I'm going to be taking them on very very soon. I'll start my own thread when I'm up & running, but I've just totted up unauth o/d, rejected dd/so charges tonight, and they're over £1k - I've only been banking with them since last March :o

Cheers

Michael
