  • 3 weeks later...

I am in a similar situation. I am a South African and have been here 20 years with indefinite leave to stay, my father is British, my grandfather British and all his ancestors British. The wife is British also, however due to a disability, I have been on benefits for the past two years and at the moment I am on Pension credit with another 2 years to go before I am 65. I cannot afford the £800 they want to process the application so I guess I will just have to remain a South African living here. If they don't like the benefits issue they can reject the application and I lose £800!

Yes exactly. You should have done this long ago.

Although if you have been here for 20 years on ILR,then there has prob not been much need for you to go for BC or you would have done it.

I know many who are the same, some of them Eastern Europeans who are not bothered about the passport.

The main problems come when travelling through Europe and the need for visas.

For example if you are Russian and take a flight that goes via Prague.

Me and my ex was faced with this prob when there was a cancellation by Czech air on route to Moscow.

Czech air arranged to put everyone up in an hotel 5km from the airport.

Immigration at the airport in Prague would not let her out as she had no visa.

A Brit passport obv does not see these problems.

But I blame Governments for the problems of the 1000s who were given toursist visas for 6 month stays when they were only visiting the UK for 2 weeks.

No wonder so many were allowed to disappear to London and other cities with a 5 and half month head start before anyone even bothered to ask why they had not left the UK.

When I was in the services overseas in a British colony we had to swear allegiance to the queen, but having British ancestors, having doen service for the queen etc does nto count. What does count is the £800 you have to pay for the application to be processed. My cousin recently became an American citizen and it cost him about $300!
