Hi all,

Unfortunately my employers are relocating and the move will leave it impossible for me to continue working for them.

I will be offered a redundancy payment (Approx £1700). Will this have an affect on any benefits i may receive when u become unemployed.

I must point out that i will be unable to look for other work as i will be caring for my own 2 children (3 & 2).

Benefits would only be affected if you have savings of over £6k or have income over a certain amount per week. Are you a lone parent or part of a couple? if it's the former, you can claim income support as a lone parent.

So in my case it is irrelevant what amount of redundancy i am given?

As long as your redundancy payment plus any existing savings you have amount to less than £6k, yes, it's irrelevant. If you have savings between £6k and £16k, your weekly benefit payment will be reduced but you won't lose entitlement completely.

mattybaby it changed a few years ago now :o don't worry though we still get calls from the CAB quoting very old guidance amd they don't like it when they are corrected only a couple of weeks ago I had a call similar to this to confirm the date someone could sign on from as they were made redundant and had redundancy, PILON and holiday pay, they would not believe when I advised it was all treated as a capital and a claim could be made the day following the offical redundancy if they wanted to pusue the claim for JSA but due to the amounts involved for that person it was only a claim for contribution based JSA.
