Was well peeved by dispatches a few weeks ago so fired of a letter to my dentist. She had said I needed hygienist treatment, and told me nothing similar was available on the NHS. Since discovered I could have had a Scale and Polish for free.

Dear sir(s),

Acting on advice from Dr...I attended your surgery on ... for hygienist teeth cleaning. I paid £48.50 to undertake this treatment privately, again under the advice of Dr ......... I was not advised that I was entitled to a ‘scale and polish’ under the NHS for a maximum cost to me of £18.50. I require a detailed summary of the treatment undertaken during this appointment, in particular how this treatment differed from an NHS ‘scale and polish.’

I expect a reply within 14 days. Be aware that if you cannot provide an adequate explanation as to why I was advised that this treatment could only be undertaken privately, and a detailed summary of how the treatment you provided differed from that which you are statutorily obligated to provide under the NHS, my intention is to reclaim the difference in cost from you.

You’re surgery was aware that at the time of this treatment my dental costs were covered by an HC2 certificate, so the cost of an NHS ‘scale and polish’ to me would have been £0.

Yours Sincerely

Yesterday morning received a cheque for £45 :)

The accompanying letter denied wrongdoing as would be expected but still pleased with the outcome. Trying to share this with as many as possible, hopefully someone else can have some success too.

I have no legal qualifications whatsoever, so please check any input I have for accuracy. And please correct me if you disagree!
