Hi all,

I'm after some advice on behalf of my mum. She has put in for voluntary redundancy, and will find out later this week if she's been accepted. She'd like to know whether she could claim JSA should the need arise. If she's accepted for the redundancy, she'll receive approximately £9000 as severance pay. My dad works as a taxi driver and is classed as self-employed, and this is where I'm stuck as I don't know how self-employment affects benefits.

If you have paid enough NI contributions then you can claim Contributions based JSA for 6 months and then if the redundancy has left less than 16,000 in the bank you can claim income based JSA.

If you have more than 16,000 in the bank you cannot claim income based JSA nor if your partner is working.

I agree with what Citizenb has written. Regarding a means-tested JSA claim, the amount of benefit would be affected by savings over £6,000 but the cut-off point is certainly £16,000.

Severance monies aren't taken into account for cont based JSA, and as capital only for income based JSA. HB and CTB are assessed in the same way as income based. Husband's self employed income may well mean no entitlement to income based benefits - but dependant on the level of income and hours, working tax credit may be a possibility.
