Plenty of free options, however protection is better than curing the problems.

Microsoft security essentials is free anti-virus & anti spyware

AVG and Avast both have free versions

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/ is a free online scanner with very little downloading needed.

If in doubt, contact a qualified insured legal professional (or my wife... she knows EVERYTHING)

Or send a cheque or postal order payable to Reclaim the Right Ltd.

to

923 Finchley Road London NW11 7PE

Click here if you fancy an email address that shows you mean business! (only £6 and that will really help CAG)

If you can't donate, please use the Internet Search boxes on the CAG pages - these will generate a small but regular income for the site

Please also consider using the

C.A.G. Toolbar

If you're already infected, download Malware Bytes (freeware). Do a quick scan.

As for the free real time protection. Avast and Microsoft Security Essentials (as mentioned above) are the best. With the former being my preferred one, but if you have 2GB Ram or more, they will both run quietly and simultaneously in the background.

Haven't had my scales tickled by a Mod for a while:razz:.

I agree with the above, I've moved onto Avast freom AVG and thinks its great.

Another Freebie called Hijack This !, is very usefull for removing stubborn virus and trojans, etc but you do need a good bit of IT knowledge to use it as its very easy to accidently remove important Windows components.

What is it that you are trying to do that brings up error messages? If you are trying to install virus software, then me thinks you already have a little monster or two inside your pooter. In that case, you will have to install the software from a penstick and run them that way.

I do have Trojans ect, it keeps telling me, I've removed my other virus protection thingys and it's when I'm trying to install the new one.

I'm on my laptop at the moment I'll try again later on.

Scott. You need to put the setup of Malware Bytes and Avast/Microsoft Security Essentials on to a pen drive from the good laptop. Then put it on the desktop of the dodgy one and install that way.

Thanks, SOD'EM, just need to find out what a pen drive is now !!!

I get what you mean though, my computers telling me I've got spam bots and Trust Warriors as well, my son goes onto World of Warcraft sites ect and we had a dodgy lodger who was getting spam e-mails, I recon thats where the problems lie.

My Laptops sound.

Essentials which are free

Spyware Cleaners - these 2 between them will deal with the majority of problems

SuperAnti Spyware http://www.superantispyware.com/

Malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Resident Protection as well as an antivirus program I use this

SpyBot search & Destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html - Use the browser immunise feature (also protects your host file (very important) and can be used to enable disable start up programs)

Temporay Folders and Registry Cleaner - keeps things at peak performance by clearing out the rubbish

CCleaner http://www.piriform.com/
