This is a fantastic site that already has and will continue to benefit many people in many different ways and for this Dave, Bankfodder and the moderators must be given a huge thankyou for the hard work that we can all see they continue to put into the up keep of this site, not to mention the financial commitment to keep this site up and running.

I feel that it would be a great shame and loss to all those that have become members in this friendly community to find that this site in the future has no option but to shutdown because of the financial burden that it must take to keep this site up and running especially at the rate it is currently growing.

So this is where I may get shot down (bullet proof vest is on) with my suggestion.

If a guest wants to come on in and view the posts that just fine, however if anybody wants to make a post or view certain parts of the forum you need to become a member. Now how do the current members feel about say a yearly subscription fee of say 5 or 10 pounds.

Taking into consideration that there are now over 10,000 members this would help Dave and Bankfodder to keep up to date with the latest legal reference material available and would also facilitate any future upgrades required and I would hope help towards the daily running costs also.

This site has a lot to offer and I feel that a subscription of say 5 or 10 pounds per year is a small price to pay against the benefits that can be gained.

Of course subscription fees for banks could be say 30 pound for a subscription!!!!

Maybe Dave or Bankfodder could set up a poll for this.

Regards

Not an attemt to shoot you down or be the dissenting voice here, but.....

Many people are here because the banks are taking them for every penny they have got. If they see this service available but its going to cost £5 or £10 they are going to be put off.

While I know it is a fantastic service I would have shyed away from it had there been a subscription charge.

Bovvereds suggestion of a donate feature is a much better option as it allows users to access the site, get the tools tehy need to get their money back and then from that money make a donation to help others

It already exists - it's part of Bank Fodders 'strapline'...however, for now it is by way of vouchers to buy law books etc...

The issue of financial support has been discussed, and I am sure that when the guys get 5 minutes breathing space they will look at how the issue of contributions can be better managed...

You all must thank Bankfodder and Dave for the site. They pay for it. The ethos is that the site is free and open to all(except Banks!). They have asked for contributions to buy law books. These are very expensive and have to be bought year after year as the law changes (statute, case and common). If enough is raised, they will also be able to subscribe expensive on-line research facilities.

If you want to help, and can afford it, please make a donation, however small.

See: We'd like to buy some law books in the General forum

The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.

Don't know anyone who couldn't afford a pound. A pound a member. That would be ten thousand pounds to start off with. Should help a bit?

Fair comment but when your already £21 overdrawn because of a bank charge with no authorized ovedraft and a further £28 coming off in a couple of days for being overdrawn 20p is hard to come by never mind £1. Dont forget that we would have to have access to a debit card to make payment and the banks wont authorise payment because your overdrawn!

Its a catch 22 unitl the banks pay up and we are all flush at which point everyone has access to their own money to make a donation.

I don't think taking a percentage of the money regained through court would be a wise decision, I also think the initial payment idea almost turns the idea of the website around and turns it into another money grabbing organisation. Internet advice is a cheap commodity and therefore I always hope the best advice is the cheapest. This is the case here, and although I intend to contribute after my impending success, a forced charge is not something I like the sound of and I don't imagine many others would too.

I would probably suggest maybe having a few adverts down the side as well as contributions from grateful users. Adverts are annoying, but are common place on most websites, I don't think many people would steer clear of the sound advice for fear of a beer advertisement. Maybe see if you can get a bank to sponsor you for a chuckle, only joking. But I'd still be happy to accept a few flashing banners or something than see the website impose a "commission fee".

Good work anyway guys

it is very easy to set up a pay-pal account for way of donations and have a link to it on the site, i think its a damn good idea as the more members this site gets the bigger the bandwidth usage will be = more money to pay for it, i would personally be very happy to donate to this site, i think the admins and moderators are doing a fantastic job all for free

I for one would be really happy to help with a donation, I wouldnt have known where to start to try to reclaim any of my charges, I always thought there was nothing to do about them. However, there are a lot of sites I have been on asking for donations, hows about a paypal button so people can donate there and then. I realise that not everyone has paypal, but its only a suggestion.

I would be happy to donate but have niether a card nor paypal.

If you have a book shop that you use regular Borders or waterstones or anything like that couldn't some people post book tokens to you? or postal orders but thats a little time consuming cashing them.

I am a bit like Ispartacus75 (earlier post) - absolutely penniless. I would definitely not have come on here if I'd been asked to pay money up front, just for the fact that I had no idea what I would be finding and it would seem frivolous to be throwing more money around when you don't know what you are going to find.

For millions of reasons, I prefer the donation button idea.

Maybe I have some unrequited hippy aspirations but I much prefer the idea of this being a co-operative type affair.

If we start going with subscription fees and/or commercialisation where does it end? Collecting money could be time consuming and costly - would users incur charges for late/bounced payments (which I reckon there'd be a lot of given most of us are barely what you could call solvent!)

Ridiculous I know but you see my point.

These wonderful guys need reimbursing for their time and outlay but surely we are generous enough of spirit to make a pledge of a donation and stick to it.

Could even take it further and offer services in return. One good turn deserves another. Mechanics, builders, joiners etc etc might have something they need?

I could do a spot of ironing, make a nice apple crumble too!

Yes, donations is the idea most preferable to me.

Maybe we should have a poll?
