Hey guys

a friend of mine took his laptop to a local shop as it didn't want to charge. They repaired it but 2 months later, it died again with the same issue. The shop took it in under warranty and have now said that it is unrepairable i.e. needs a new mobo.

They have offered to fit a new mobo free but he would have to buy it or they will give him a full refund.

It seems to me that they botched the first repair (which they admit they didn't test everything) and for all we know, the first half-ar*ed repair could have led to the second situation.

What are his actuall rights in this issue?

Thanks!

Did they give any detailed info by way of report/invoice as to what they actually did the first time ?

Psu failure can often take out the Mobo.

I think Conniff posed the question in an effort to maybe trying to determine a likely (or possible) explanation here....

Very often it can be seen from other threads and peoples experiences-that answers can be found.

Conniff has this experience :)

He didn't, I did ... diferent ampage for a start! (lower rather than higher)

Honestly guys, its way past the point of tech support. Besides, no matter now. We returned yesterday and got a full refund for the work and the old, dead, laptop back.

Don't need techie support, worked in IT ranging from tech support, server cluster builds through to now being a senior adviser on systems integration in airports. Thanks anyway though!!!!:)

Its not the emphasis on any tech support-I think we have crossed wires here.

The reason for the questions is to try to identify a cause of action !

Or should I say-the best way forward.

It's not my profession, but, today I returned a laptop I had repaired to a friend. It needed a new power supply socket and this required a complete strip down of the laptop, removal of the motherboard and some very tricky soldering. All fixed, friend happy, no charge.

My question is, if you are so clever with all that IT experience, why didn't you fix it for him!!!!

IT experience and PC/laptop repairs can be two totally different issues. One's a hardware issue, the other a software, so someone could be over qualified in IT support but not have the first idea on repairs.
