Yes unfortunately this was ordered by the GOV to all supermarkets.

They were given a transitional period to phase in withdrawal of free carrier bags.

My local ASDA had no carriers at the tills today-instead a woman was giving them out.

I dont think anyone can blame the supermarkets-this was forced onto them by the GOV following EU directives.Ireland was first to go with it.

Tesco introduced bio degradeable carriers in 2006 which decompose in 18 months instead of 10 years.

Marks and Spencer changed their options too.

heres some info on the Irish situ.;

And finally-Sainsburys take on it.

Just take your own bags. And you might find that you can type faster if you don't press the shift key for the first letter of each word.....

Oh that is annoying. Reading text like that makes me think of James Kirk speaking, but anyway.

A Tesco till operator a few days ago told me I could only have one plastic bag because they were being withdrawn. Having more shopping that one bag could hold did not impress. However, one could easily go to the self service checkouts and help onesself to as many bags as possible.

You can't do that in asda. Our local one didn't have any bags on the self scan either apart from the bags for life for 5p.

The environmental issues are all well and good as is saying that you should take your own bags but what if you pop in for just a couple of bags worth but end up buying a trolley full. Presumably you then have to cram the trolley full of shopping into the two small bags, then have them split as soon as you leave the store. And what if you weren't planning a shopping trip but then remembered you needed some things whilst you were out?

Asda are more than willing to use bags on their home delivery service despite all the goods being in crates anyway. We frequently have just one or two items put in a bag that wasn't needed anyway. We also have the opposite where they jam 60 tins of beans into one bag which has then split and can't be reused anyway. Really saving the planet there!

It is a bit hypocritical of them! I always have a shoulder bag with me anyway and usually have a couple of shopping bags in there. I have stopped using home shopping services on the basis of their incompetence, but I do remember that they used about 5 times as many bags as required. You could complain but I doubt you would get anything more than lip service.

I noticed today in my local ADSA people are using their own bags-but creating headaches on the self scan.

The reason is that the weighing tray where your bag is-is programmed for carriers only-so with people using an assortment of their own bags-it needs an operator to overide this.I bet they didnt think of this before.

True - it's a damned nuisance and really puts me off using them. The problem could be sorted by increasing the discrimination level. I cant see the store selling anything that weighs anything near what those bags weigh.

It's far better to plan ahead. I don't drive so I always carry a rucksack (for bottles and heavy stuff) with a cloth bag in it. I haven't needed a carrier bag for years and it's much easier to carry. If you're not walking keep bags or boxes in the car.

Remember you have to live on this planet. Filling it with plastic waste is irresponsible.

Whats with the moaning about bags?

The answer is quite simple really......either take your own or pay for one. When they are free, everyone takes more than they should and then use them as bin liners....well, those days are over now and you have to pay.

Its not hard is it?

Well, I don't know what to think - a few months ago a stupid girl on the ASDA check out (I was doing my monthly shop) handed me two carrier bags and told me I couldn't have any more - I had £175 worth of shopping for god's sake! I simply told her to put it all back on the shelf. The queue was building up and I hadn't even packed more than the two bags supplied to me! I was quite prepared to walk off and leave it there all over the check out until the supervisior was called and told the girl off - gave me some bags and then packed it all for me!

I do use them to line bins, and I also use them as poop scoops, I always whizz past the self service check outs now and help myself to one of their big brown boxes of them - got a good supply in my cupboard now - getting on for 750! That'll keep me going for a while! I even use them as freezer bags sometimes, they have many uses, but I do know they aren;t very green! What to do though is the question.

Buy your own to start with.

Every bag that someone uses from the supermarket just puts the costs up for everyone else. So your stock of 750 bags is costing others money! And in my mind, that makes you a theif.....you take more than you are allowed!!

When they are free, everyone takes more than they should and then use them as bin liners
... thereby saving using normal black liners, which are even less environment friendly, so it's called recycling, nothing wrong with that, surely.

why not do what primark have done and switch to paper ones, recyclable and just as easy to use, americas been using them for years

Great idea on principle, but Primark doesn't sell wet stuff, and that's the big drawback with the paper ones: one whiff of humidity and they fall apart, plus of course they are not as solid or flexible, so rip easily.

Ikea used to have the paper ones, I remember the relief when they switched to plastic ones, not having to worry about your brand new plates falling out of the bottom!

Struggle a lot more. :-D

I'm sorry, I just don't buy the "pay for bags and you won't use as many". As for the "takes x amount of yrs to disintegrate, considering we still find pottery and human-made stuff going back thousands of years, I am not sure that bio-degradable is such a valid argument.

I personally think that the solution lies in those plastic-type bags made of corn? or something which disintegrate quite quickly. They may cost more to produce to start with, but with the industry being given targets towards reducing waste, why is it the consumer who's getting charged yet again?
