I know what you mean Honey! We bought the daughter a new comp last Christmas with vista on and it blocked everything you tried to install or download. We contacted the del helpline and they were brilliant and talked us through what to do to overcome this. I would suggest phoning your supplier and asking for help. They are usually only to happy to help!

You could always turn off UAC.

I'm finding very little that refuses to run on vista. My old printer had issues but thankfully it died a couple of months ago so had to get a new one which works fine.

Are there any specific programs you are struggling with?

The majority of naughties that get into an online PC are when you are logged in as the 'Administrator', this leaves your system exposed. Windows XP logged you as admin by default, but Windows Vista does not, that is one of the reasons it's security is so much better than XP.

Log yourself in as the 'Administrator' and you will be able to download to your hearts content.

If you leave you pc on then make sure you log back when you have finished downloading. It will default this way if you close it down.

Hmmm....I seem to be the only one of many people I know that has had Vista installed for almost a year with absolutely no problems at all, it's a fantastic OS!!

Lived through bankruptcy to tell the tale! Worked in various industries and studied law at university. All advice is given in good faith only :)

Well, I'm prepared to accept that once I have found my way around Vista it will probably be better. However, I am having one or two problems which are driving me nuts the main one being with the broadband. I have Virgin broadband, worked fine on XP etc but with this Vista, everytime i walkaway from the laptop for over 10 minutes and return I have to restart the computer to get the modem to work! Its like it drops the modem after 10 mins of idleness, and I cannot fathom this one out!

Also, I have tried to transfer files from my old laptop to this new one - it doesn;t work, I cannot even get my copy of Microsoft Office which I purchased a few years ago, to work, so other than the trial of Word which comes with Vista for 60 days free, I'm stuck - no excel or powerpoint either - also i use Incredimail for my e-mail - Vista doesn't like it!

Any ideas?

You don't have a problem with the modem, rebooting your laptop has no effect on the modem.

Are you using wireless or a direct connection to the modem?

If a direct connection, are you using USB or ethernet?

Hi Conniff, thnks for your reply. I have given some thought to your questions (thick as a plank with computers!) and I do not use wireless, so it must be the direct connection to the modem, and it is USB rather than ethernet.

And really - I walk away from the thing for 10 mins, come back, refresh the page I've been looking at to be told there is no connection to the internet! First I tried switching the modem off at the mains (I worked out with the NTL modem if it oes off the lights remain stable on the box) and then back on, np joy and it is only when I restart the laptop that the modem suddenly springs into life and I'm back on the internet!

The rest of Vista I'm sure will reveal its secrets in time! I will say its very fast! But then i had my old Toshiba for almost 11 years before itgave up the ghost and spent most of my time shrieking at it to hurry up when online!

Welcome to the world of Winblows sorry windows.

I would suggest getting a copy of XP an starting from scratch. Vista is a system resource hog and alot of current software will not run on Vista.

Im currently using Susse linux on my pc much better and far more secure than any windows operating system without the bugs too.

Steer clear of Vista until Microsoft release some major updates due this year and hardware/software manufacturers adopt vista more

Only Microsoft Office 2007 will work correctly with Vista

i agree

had vista for a week

purchessed xp pro disc and got rid of vista

nothing works with vista

Sorry - there is a saying - bad workmen blame their tools. It has to be something you have done as I have a lot of gear and it all worked on install. Never had any problems.

Jackie Try ethernet. No software required and always on faster and more reliable than usb which uses pc resorses.

I concur.

Vista is an excellent operating system, I've been running it for over 18 months since beta and the final release version has been more reliable for me than windows xp.

A lot has changed with the operating system, and you have to appreciate these changes over XP. UAC should be a help, not a hinderance, and you can't expect all software to work with a next gen operating sytem, you have to let go at some point.

With the broadband issue, buy a cheap network card (if you haven't got one already) and connect it with that. USB was never meant for sustained data transmission, whereas Ethernet is :)

why i havent told it too???,

Poor Honey, you sound like your scolding a 6 year old.

You need to change the way the CD starts.

Click 'start' and then 'control panel'.

In the 'hardware and sound section', click 'Play CDs or other media automatically.'

That will display the autoplay menu.

Have a look through and see what you want to do.

When you see this you will see how it works.

I put up with it for 6 months - I really did try to give it a fair crack of the whip.

I gave up in the end - it was slow, buggy, and half the peripherals I had had no drivers for them (not really the OS fault I suppose), so I put Ubuntu on the machine instead.

Have never looked back - everything I've plugged into it worked first time. It doesn't keep asking me 'are you sure' everytime I want to do anything (despite having that user protective mode or whatever it was called turned off). I didn't have to struggle to get my new camera working (4 hours with Vista - gave up in the end) either.

Personally, when there is such a good, free alternative to Vista available, I struggle to understand why anyone would use it.

Installing software is a breeze too - you just tell it what software you want and it goes and gets it for you - it already knows you are in the UK, so doesn't keep asking you where you are, if you want UK key layout etc... it just installs what you have asked for and gets on with it.

It's like a breath of fresh air.

I agree with the ethernet comments though.

I think you'll like it.

It's far more user friendly than Vista (and prettier too for that matter!)- and things 'just work'.

In fact, I installed something the other day expecting it to not work. It worked fine of course, but getting rid of the Windows mentality after so many years is hard.

I'd advise that before anyone makes the jump to evaluate what programs they are using under the Windows environment and find ones that will perform equally, or better, before doing anything.

I can't say I'm that experienced with Linux enough to rattle off program reccomendations, it's not an operating system that I could use for much more than tinkering, as the line of work I'm in is purely Windows development so that trails off to home use as well..
