Was Cagbotted for posting on the 'wrong' Thread, so I suppose I will have to ask my question on a separate Thread??...

If U are away from your home address, what is the maximum time that U are allowed by the DVLA, before U have to notify them of a Change of Address on your Driving Licence, even if it may NOT be permanent???

Its not really that clear, but I think you would only have to notify them if the change of address was permanent.

Changes as you prob know are no longer made on paper licences so you would fill in the D1 and have to get the newstlye photo licence (presuming you have the old style of course)

I stand to be corrected on this but there does not seem to be clear distinctions on timescales.

What would be true to say,is that once you are clear that your address thats registered with the Dvla is no longer your permanent address (ie you wont be going back ) then of course you would need to provide them with the info.

Thanks MARTIN3030

btw, I've had the NEW Photo ID style DL ever since they 1st came out!

I am aware that it is an offence NOT to keep your address details up to date.

I believe the max fine is £1,000...although don't quote me on that.

I was just wondering HOW a prosecution could be successfully brought?

Would the Police base your 'Permanent' address on where U paid your council tax/utility bills in your name?...where your car was registered to?...or some other criteria?

To say that the timescale is NOT defined seems a tad woolly to me.

As it would be obvious as to the defence, if prosecuted.

Hi MTM, I would say that it could very well be based on precisely that, BUT if you were permanently aboded elsewhere and were just using the other address as a postal address, not sure how they would really know, Can I ask why you are asking, if might help with an answer

No particular reason.

Just one of those 'Where does belly-button fluff come from?' type questions.

It seems that there would be little point in having a law if it could NOT be easily enforced?!

Perhaps any discrepancy is only highlighted/prosecuted when there is a full blown investigation in the event of an accident/insurance claim??

Strange, the amount of fine though (...if it really is £1,000), especially when the fine for not having a valid MOT is (...or it certainly used to be!) only £50.

Just throwing a curve ball in here. I now live in Spain, my licence still shows my UK address as DVLA states they cannot issue a change of address unless it is a UK address, so for the rest of my natural I will have my old UK address. Also have asked them a question regarding using BFPO numbers as addresses for servicemen. I will post when I have an answer
