  1. Well this is a first for me, have been installing windows for years but this laptop has got me so frustrated now. Friend brought this to me after he thought he was clever completely blanking the hard drive and all partitions, Using a USB drive I managed to get windows 8.1 installed but none of the drivers from Acer will install just freeze up the machine. After 4 days I am pulling my hair out now (if I had any) but finally got most things installed but no wifi, no matter what driver I try it just freezes the machine up and have to hard boot it with power button. Has anyone got one of these laptops that could upload the recovery image with the correct drivers? George
  2. Hi, I purchased a laptop just over 18 months ago from PC world,an acer v5 Last week it packed up without warning. I took it to a local it specialist who sent it to acer for an engineers report which I received today, the mainboard has failed and acer now want £350 from myself to carry out the repair. I have spoken to acer escalations department today who told me that they would not waive the charge as it's out of warranty, I mentioned the sale of goods act which they said would be my best course of action from herein which I was not satisfied with, Where exactly do I stand with regards to acer paying the cost as this should not fail in this way and I never purchased the item expecting it to last only 18 months I'm receiving a call tomorrow from the escalations department manager as I requested in my conversation with the advisor I spoke to today, I want to arm myself with all the correct info I can get, so if anyone's out that could help me please it would be gratefully appreciated.
  3. Hi all. We purchased a acer aspire one from comet last boxing day for a present .We have had a lot of problems with it. First the microphone didnt work, a key has popped off the keyboard, and the screen has now failed. comet fobbed us off from day one, and so recently we contacted acer who seemed very nice and said dhl woul collect the laptop and repair under warranty. Or so we thought!! We then got a bill stating that the screen was damaged by us so was not covered, but the keyboard would be replaced and the microphone fixed. I complained that we had not damaged the screen and it should be covered by warranty(!)10 months old) This complaint was escalated and i received a phone call from a lady stating that she was bearing bad news !Acer were not going to repair anything on the computer and she was overturning the decision to replace the keyboard and mic(which we have in writing). She stated that keys DO NOT drop off the keyboard, and must of been prized off. Today i have recieved the laptop back with NO REPAIRS at all. :mad2:Seething ! Help please
  4. I took out a mobile internet contract with Vodafone which included a Acer Aspire laptop 23 months ago which was fine, had no issues. The contract is due to finish next month and i have informed Vodafone that i do not wish to extend my mobile internet service. The problem is that the laptop has now developed a fault and will not switch on. Whenever i try to turn on it just goes to a black screen which says "operating system not found". I have spoken to a few laptop repair shops and the IT people in my work and the general consensus seems to be that the hard drive has developed a fault and will need replaced. I checked the manufacturers information which came with the laptop and found that it has a 2 year warranty so it is still within this period so i am going to try to get it repaired through this channel. My question is this though..... If i have issues trying to get the manufacturer to repair under warranty i believe i would then be within my rights to refer to the Sales of Goods Act, as it is reasonable to expect a laptop to last more than 23 months, but as i got the laptop from Vodafone would i be right in saying that i would have to chase them under the SOGA rather than Acer as my contract is with Vodafone and not Acer? Any help and advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  5. Our lass has an Acer netbook she bought from an online reseller. Just within the warranty period it developed a fault and now I'm trying to sort it out - we're now actually 2 weeks outside warranty. I didn't realise this at the time. Acer have refused to get involved. I understand the contract is with the online reseller. Am I right in saying that although the laptop is outside the normal warranty period it is reasonable to say that 1 year is not fit for purpose or of satisfactory quality? Finally should I be quoting the sale of goods act or the EU legislation? Thanks
  6. I have a laptop that Acer sent me in April this year to replace a previous one that was faulty. The laptop is an Aspire 5942g that replaced a Aspire 6930. The new laptop now has the same problem as its' predecessor - it stopped playing Blu Ray discs, then stopped playing any type of disc. I've asked Acer to fix it under warranty, but they say I have to pay because the warranty of the original laptop expired earlier this year. However, this is not the original laptop - it's one I've had 8 months that they sent to replace the original broken one. I believe that the new laptop has its' own warranty, so should be repaired under that. Acer state that the warranty of the earlier broken laptop applies to the replacement. What's the legal standpoint on this? Surely, a new unit has its' own warranty, and not the one of a broken unit it replaced - especially not a different model of laptop. Am I right? Thanks in advance for all your help
  7. Hello I am not sure if this is the right location to post this in, I did look around a bit but this seemed to be the most relevant place to post this problem. I will try to keep this short and sweet but there is a lot of problems :c If you do not want to read my wall of text, I have made a summary of the problem at the bottom! Basically my mum has an account with a catalogue company called marshal wards, and I thought it would be a good idea to buy a new computer from the company and then pay it back in installments. I purchased the computer on the 10th of October 2009, and received it a few weeks later, all was going well until about January 2010 when the computer started slowing down and making a loud noise (compared to the whisper silence i was used to) So I phoned marshal wards up and they told me that I had to send the computer to their repair center (instead of them even asking what was wrong, or coming to my house) So I sent the computer to the repair shop, almost 3 weeks later i receive the computer back, apparently there was a problem with the hard drive. All is fine and dandy until May 2010, the same problem, so I phoned up the company first thing and complained that in less then 4 months my computer was broken again, you may be thinking that I ABUSE my computer, but I only really use it for surfing the web, playing a few online games with friends and chatting. I spoke to the manager of the repair company, and said that I wanted a new computer unit, or a refund. He told me that would not be possible as they only repair units, and would only replace it if they could not fix it, and for a refund I need to contact Marshal Wards, which I then did. Upon speaking with Marshal Wards they told me that since it is still under the 1 year manufacturers guarantee, they could not do anything about it, and I have to send it off for repair. They would not even accept my plead for a refund on a 6 month old computer. So I send it off again, 3 weeks later it returns, same problem listed on the receipt, hard drive failure. All is fine and dandy again until...wait for it...it breaks again! Now by this time I'm thinking "Is this just me or is there something wrong with this computer?" I was abit reluctant to send the computer away for another 3 week vacation at the repair center, so I just left it alone for a few days. After that it seemed to work fine, no overly loud grinding and whirring noises, no slow loading times and this went on untill a few days ago, when it alllll...started again. This is four, count em FOUR times this has happened in under one year of buying a top of the range £700 computer! I have sent it off twice, it magically fixed its self once, and now it is on the fritz again, I REALLY need this computer for my school work so its a bind since its either pray it works enough for me to finish my work, or send it off for a nice 3 week vacation and take the bus to the library to do all my work. I just REALLY want some help, either a way for ACER to give me a NEW computer without having to wait the 3 week period, or what I would REALLY like is for Marshal Wards to give me a refund, even if it is not cash and store credit, I will gladly buy a new computer from them, just making sure its not a model made from ACER. Phew, that's about it, sorry about the long read, i just needed to say EVERYTHING so that you understood the bind I'm in! SUMMARY OF EVENTS I purchased a new computer in October 2009, it broke in January 2010, then again in May 2010 and then again in September 2010, all of these problems were due to hard drive fails. Marshal Wards (the company I payed) Will NOT give me a refund since they said its still under the one year guarantee, and ACER (the computer manufacturers) Will not replace the unit, only replace the faulty hard drives each time i send it off (this takes 3 weeks each time!) I am looking to either find a way to get a refund from Marshal Wards or get a new computer unit from ACER at least. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this post!
