  4. A new fee-free template for basic UK bank accounts has been revealed by the Treasury after a deal with major banks. Basic accounts do not offer overdrafts or cheque books, and may be given to those with a chequered credit history. Some holders of these accounts have been hit by initial fees of £30 or more after a direct debit or standing order payment has bounced. The cost can then escalate if the fees are unpaid. Under the new terms agreed, these one-off fees will be scrapped. Economic Secretary to the Treasury Andrea Leadsom said the new accounts would give basic bank account holders "certainty and clarity". "It will end people being effectively locked out of their basic bank accounts due to high fees and charges when their payments failed," she added. Account holders should also be offered a debit card, in order to withdraw cash from the UK's ATM network. Andrew Tyrie, chairman of the Treasury Select Committee, welcomed the move but said it came a year later than planned. Inside a debt charity: Matt Barlow, chief executive of Christians Against Poverty, says: We ask all our new debt clients to open a basic bank account with a bank that they don't owe money to. It is often not an easy business, especially for vulnerable people. In some cases, staff at the local branches are unaware of the basic bank account and we have found they inadvertently up-sell, offering the client a current account which results in rejection when they carry out a credit check. This is especially hard on someone who is trying really hard to get their finances back on track and take their first tentative steps to addressing problem debt. One of the other biggest stumbling blocks is that the banks want photo identification, which can be too expensive for someone without a passport or driving licence. There are only one or two companies which allow other forms of ID and we would love to see the Treasury tackle that issue. Another difficult element is the lack of a debit card with many of these accounts which really hit people in rural communities who end up travelling to a cash machine out of their immediate area and are unable to do shopping online. 'Fair fees' Some banks have, at times, withdrawn or reduced basic account holders' access to cash machines, prompting criticism from campaigners. There are an estimated nine million users of basic bank accounts in the UK. Nine High Street banks have signed up to the deal, accounting for 90% of the UK current account market. Access to basic bank accounts is extremely sporadic across the sector” says Mike O'Connor Chief executive, StepChange Banking industry body the British Bankers Association, which worked with the banks to develop the new template, said the revised account was aimed at people who might not be able to open a standard account and customers in financial difficulty. "These basic accounts will make it easier for more people to manage their money. They will have many features that will help people to budget, pay bills and save up," said BBA chief executive Anthony Browne. The EU authorities agreed a directive earlier this year that said all residents should be given the opportunity to open a basic bank account, with fees that were fair, and allowing people the opportunity to switch providers. Kevin Mountford, head of banking at price comparison website Moneysupermarket, said: "While the main banks have always borne a degree of responsibility to provide such facilities, these have often lacked clarity around fee structures and uncertainty as to who can and cannot apply, so this should now change. "It is essential that all banks fully enter into the spirit of this ruling and create basic banking products in order to help those customers who have been badly underserved in the past." Mike O'Connor, chief executive of StepChange debt charity, said: "The experience of our clients is that access to basic bank accounts is extremely sporadic across the sector, and things like high charges and limited access to cash machines can cause real problems on a day-to-day basis. "This move will give hope to the millions of people who currently feel locked out of the banking system, and help them to regain control of their finances. "However, signs of financial difficulty should not be ignored. We would urge banks and those across the credit sector to do more to recognise when people are falling behind on their essential bills and credit commitments, and signpost them to free independent debt advice as early as possible." 5. Hi, I know there is a Vodaphone rep that frequents these forums so if they or anyone else could clarify something for me please. My friend has an iPhone on contract with Vodaphone and has requested a code to make it sim free. He was told by an advisor that they cannot issue a code as he got the phone and contract through Phones4U. As they have gone bust what is he supposed to do now, surely it doesn't matter where he got the phone from, his contract is with Vodaphone and it is currently locked to their network. Any advice please. Thanks.
  6. Hi, i'm new to the site and was wondering if anyone could help with this problem;- I decided to visit Hexham, having never been shopping there before, taking my 7 year old son with me. Nearing Hexham my son told me he needed the toilet and I managed to find a car-park on the edge of town, which was signed as a long-stay FREE car-park. Entering the car-park at 11.20am I also noticed what looked like a ‘pay machine’ but this was covered in black plastic and obviously not in use. I parked as quickly as possible and took my son into town to look for some public conveniences and returned to my car some 30 minutes later to double check the parking was indeed FREE, since I had noticed the covered up machines, I found a parking ticket on my windscreen. Considering the signage states that it is a FREE car-park for 3 HOURS and that my car was observed entering at 11.20am yet I was still issued with a ticket at 11.41am ONLY 20 MINUTES later, also incorrectly noting the colour of my vehicle. I cannot see how this is a valid claim for a parking fine considering the times involved and the fact that my time of entering was noted. I could understand if the time was noted and I had still not returned several hours later but this is not the case, as proven by the times stated on the ticket. I'd be grateful for any help on this. Thank you Mick
  7. Hi, hope you can help I opened up a flex account with Nationwide in May and they offered me a £1000 interest free overdraft (which I signed for) for a year. Today I got a letter from them to say that my overdraft has gone down to £250 and from November I will have to pay interest. Are they allowed to just withdraw an agreement? Thanks
  8. Hi My girlfriend parked in a UKPC car park with free parking but didn't notice you needed a ticket. UKPC have issued a Notice To Keeper for £100. I always used to ignore these but I gather the advice is not to. She has until 22nd October to pay or appeal. Please advise - I've been told multiple things about the uselessness (or not) of the appeals process. Can anyone help, especially given it was free parking for (I think) up to three hours, which makes a £100 'fine' particularly ludicrous. Many thanks
  9. I signed up for the 14 day free trial which ends on 13th Oct 2014. I attempted to cancel the subscription, but could not get any further. When clicking on the "cancel subscription" link, I was taken to a page where I had to verify my email address by inputting the password. When I hit "Enter" NOTHING HAPPENS! This system will NOT let me cancel the subscription! So what next ?
  10. Just a quick question, some money has turned up in my Lloyds account and I have no idea where it has come from. I went to the bank nearly two weeks ago and they said they will block the account and investigate the money. The money was paid in on the 18th Sept. My question: is there a length of time to wait before the money becomes mine? Should I go back to the bank or just wait it out? I feel the longer I leave it the more likely it will become mine lol! Wishful thinking I know. Any suggestions would be grateful.
  11. Whilst browsing around on FaceBook, someone invited me to the ''Beat the Bailiffs and the Banks'' FB Page, so I joined, and all was well and good to begin with, I was able to impart some of the knowledge and advice I have learnt from here to others on their, who I must add, were completely out of their depth and knowledge when it came to their rights. After a while, the token ''no contract'' ''third party interloper'' comments began to surface and would always appear just after my advice advising not to contact them via phone, keep everything in writing etc etc... Then a poster with the name Getoutofdebtfree would agree in part but then attempt to undermine the advice? And slowly but surely, the truth behind the page came out, with those who have learnt or heard, of ROIRA and where calling themselves, 'commonly known as' and everything then became a ''no contract'' IGNORE, 'print this ROIRA off and stick it to your door'.... FML!! ROIRA how utterly puerile! As they say, a little knowledge is dangerous, then the accusations of being a 'shill' and a 'troll' began to surface, and I was told that if the OP had followed any of my advice she would have been out of pocket to the tune of thousands? So I said my piece and left, bidding them the very best of luck in their FMOTL defense against the corporations where their arguments have always been laughed at....
  12. Dear All, I have another small query for you regarding housing benefit overpayments due to rent free weeks! I received a call from my Mother saying that she had been contacted by her landlord, or rather a member of staff (a national social housing group). My Mother tried to explain that they (landlord) informed her that she owed them just over £500 due to Housing Benefit overpayment! Before going into detail regarding the above, I should let you know that my Mother receives, and has done for a number of years, pension credit entitling her to full HB and CT. The HB has always been paid direct to her social housing landlord. I will also add that my Mother was also paying off a HB overpayment at £xx per month. In fact, almost a year ago, I had noticed on my Mothers bank statement, that a DD was being paid out but she could not recall what this was for. After some digging I found out that this DD related to this HB overpayment, which had not only been paid in full but was still being taken from my Mothers account. This resulted in a credit to the amount of around £900, being held in my Mothers landlords account. I spoke with a member of staff who confirmed that my Mother had indeed overpaid this HB overpayment to the tune of £900 and that they would arrange for this sum to be paid back into my Mothers account. This has now taken place and as I say, some months ago. Now, arises the present predicament. My Mother has received a call from her landlord, in which they explained that her HB has been overpaid due to the fact that HB had been paying rent for the 2 rent free weeks per year since my Mother moved into her current address. I have been told that this is in the tune of around £500 and had mistakenly been included in the above £900 that my Mother had overpaid to her landlord. I was also informed that there were a large number of tenants renting property from this social housing group who have been caught in the same trap and face having to pay differing amounts back. Now, although I have not had a chance to discuss this face to face with my Mothers landlord, or a member of their staff, a few queries arise! The 1st and most important being, is my Mother liable to repay the HB that had been paid direct to the landlord due to a problem with notification of rent free weeks? This takes me back to when my Mother moved into the current property and that it is more than likely that it may well have been a member of staff of her current landlord who would have completed any such HB application form. If, as suspected, this is the case, surely it would have been down to member of staff who completed HB application form to include the correct number of weeks for which HB is being applied? I cannot fathom how my Mothers landlord has the ability to request that my Mother repay any amount of HB when this is no fault of my Mothers, as far as I can make out. Since my Mother took tenancy she has always been entitled to Pension Credit and as such, to full HB and CT. The only matter where My Mothers circumstances have changed was at the beginning of this year when she was diagnosed with Alzheimers. At that point I made contact with AgeUK who completed and submitted a application for Attendance Allowance which was ultimately granted. This then entitled my Mother to a higher figure of PC due to the Severe Disability Premium being added. However, this would have no bearing on my Mothers entitlement to HB. Bearing all of the above in mind, until I am told/shown anything to the contrary, am I correct in thinking that this or any amount of HB overpayment paid on the above basis, is/should be classed as unrecoverable due to the fact that it has been caused by official error? In a nutshell, once my Mother signed tenancy agreement, her rent has been paid in full by HB direct to her social housing landlord. My Mothers repayment of previous overpayment of HB (relating to different property/landlord) which had caused a credit of some £900 to Mothers current landlord, as explained in paragraphs 3, 4 and 5 above, should have no bearing on current matter. Indeed, I would go as far as to say that my Mothers landlord should have notified my Mother once that previous HB had been repaid and not have kept collecting this once it had been paid off. All responses and replies gratefully received.
  13. Hi All I just want to let everyone who is struggling with multiple payday loans that you can get out of the trap. A year ago I had 9 payday loans and owed close to 5k. I was struggling every month with enormous rollover fees. I dread to think what I have paid in interest fees over the last 4 years. I paid my last payment today and am now free of these sharks forever. With help and advice from this site I decided to bite the bullet a year ago and decided I would not pay anymore rollovers. I contacted them all and explained I could no longer afford the horrendous monthly fees and asked for repayment plans. some were easier to deal with than others but in the end they all agreed. I told them what i could afford and over the last year I have slowly paid them all off what i owe. The relief of knowing I never have to go through that again is enormous. I know my credit file is trashed but I earn a good wage and from now on its all mine. If i can do it then anyone can. thanks for all the wonderful advice on this site. I couldn't have done it without you.

  15. Brighthouse targets the lower income families knowing that is a captured customer base. Because they have a captured customer base, they can make big profits by offering low weekly payments, which makes the offers look attractive and affordable, coupled with a very high interest rate. If we take just one item, a Sony PlayStation 4 with a few games, Brighthouse price on extended payment terms £1,352, elsewhere buying the PlayStation and games separately, £449 or less, a difference of £903. You can buy a nice little car for £903. Think about it.

  17. Over the weekend (21-22 June 2014), Ebuyer had a Mionix Naos 8200 gaming mouse on offer at a discounted price. It was marked with the orange banner they normally use to indicate a particular product qualifies for free shipping with no minimum spend. After adding it to my basket and checking out, there was no option to apply the free delivery that had been promised on the product page. As Ebuyer don't have any telephone support over the weekend I contacted Ebuyer customer support by logging a new eNote on their system. Their response has been shockingly bad and they refuse to refund the delivery charge. See the transcript below of the conversation so far: Me 21/06/2014 11:53 The product page for the Mionix Naos 8200 [redacted as the forum system won't allow me to post a link] shows 'Free Delivery'. However, when I add it to my basket and then try to check out, there is no free delivery option. Only paid options. Why is there this mixup on your system? I wanted to order during the weekend special for this item (£29.99), but it is impossible to do so at that price. Sarah 24/06/2014 09:57 Dear [redacted] Further to your enquiry, confirm that we do have a free shipping offer, and this is highlighted on a number of web pages however as with any offer, Terms and Conditions do apply. These are stated on our help pages. Free Shipping only qualifies on orders with a total > £49.99 inc VAT, so this item would qualify for free delivery when purchasing at the current price, but not when purchasing at the offer price. I hope this helps. Kind Regards, Sarah Ebuyer.com Customer Support Team Me 24/06/2014 10:06 Hello, This item clearly had 'Free Shipping' prominently displayed next to the offer price of £29.99. I took a screenshot of it at the time. You can view it here: [redacted as the forum system won't allow me to post a link] Please refund the shipping charge back to my card. Thank you. Sarah 24/06/2014 10:21 Dear [redacted] Thank you for your response. Again I kindly advise that we do have a free shipping offer, and this is highlighted on a number of web pages however as with any offer, Terms and Conditions do apply. As this order did not meet the Terms and Conditions outlined, due to being at an offer price, carriage was correctly added and this charge agreed to upon submission of the order. Regretfully this charge cannot be refunded. Kind Regards, Sarah Ebuyer.com Customer Support Team Me 24/06/2014 10:28 Hello Sarah I'm not sure if you're aware, but eBuyer actually has 2 different free shipping offers: 1) The customer spends a minimum of £49.99 2) Certain products have a little orange banner which says 'Free Delivery'. In these cases it is not necessary to spend £49.99. You can see an example of this if you view a product such as this: [redacted as the forum system won't allow me to post a link] Hopefully you are already aware of these 2 facts and I haven't taught you anything new. If you add the £9.99 product above into your cart, you will notice that there is a free delivery option when you go to the checkout. This is because the item had an orange 'Free Delivery' banner on its product page. In other words, it is not necessary to spend £49.99. As I demonstrated in my previous note, the Mionix Naos 8200 mouse which I ordered had one of those little orange 'Free Delivery' banners. Let me know if my facts about the 2 kinds of free delivery options are incorrect, or if there's anything else you need me to clarify. Thanks. Sarah 24/06/2014 10:41 Dear [redacted] Thank you for your response. Yes you are correct, there are two options for free 5 day delivery, one is available on orders over £49.99 and one is for certain individual qualifying products. As you have outlined in your response, the difference is determined at the point of checkout. Free delivery will be an available option to select if an individual item is part of a free delivery promotion. If the free delivery icon refers to the minimum spend offer and your basket does not add up to the required value, carriage will be added. I hope this helps. Kind Regards, Sarah Ebuyer.com Customer Support Team Me 24/06/2014 10:49 Hello Sarah The product I ordered was part of the free delivery promotion, as it clearly had the orange 'Free Delivery' banner. Other products which are not part of the free delivery promotion do not have that orange banner. If what I'm saying is not correct, then please let me know the URL of a product page which does have the orange 'Free Delivery' banner but still requires the customer to spend at least £49.99. Because I suspect what you are telling me is not accurate. If a product requires that £49.99 be spent (which is the standard offer that applies to everything), then what would be the point of adding the special orange 'Free Delivery' banner to its page? Can you confirm that you've visited the URL below and seen the screenshot I took? [redacted as the forum system won't allow me to post a link] Please refund the delivery charge as the product I ordered was part of the free delivery promotion.
  18. I travel to work by bus. It is nearly a 60 hour journey if i can make all the connections, sometimes more. Yes - SIXTY hours To help the journey go quicker, i bought a kindle a while ago. I always assumed I had to purchase books, but then I discovered typing "free books" i could choose from a very large selection and download books for free. This may not be obvious to some people... So, enjoy your free reading time
  19. Something new seems to be happening in Kent and it seems that the Prison Service are literally allowing people to have "free allotments", only for use, not to keep, outside the prisons. I know this is true for the Swale, Kent area! Only drawback is that there aren't usually hosepipes or outside taps in the area so be prepared to cart a few 10l tubs of water around
  20. From the Benefits and Work Organization. BENEFITS NEWS It’s been revealed that you are five times more likely to have your benefits cut than you are to find long-term employment if you are forced onto the work programme. A shockingly small 48,000 work programme participants have been placed in jobs that lasted two years or more – just 3.2% of the total participants In the three years since the scheme started. But figures already released by the DWP show that in the 12 months up to October 2013, no fewer than 242,973 sanctions were handed down for alleged failure to participate in the work programme And to make it even harder for claimants to meet their commitments – and even easier to sanction them - the DWP is removing all the free telephones from Jobcentres. It’s a viciously cynical move which has aroused deep anger, but it’s going ahead anyway. Meanwhile, it has been revealed that Universal Jobmatch, the jobs site that claimants are forced to use, is so riddled with fake and fraudulent opportunities that the DWP is not planning to renew the contract with Monster to maintain it. Monster are currently demanding a fee of almost a million pounds to remove all the fraudulent ads. The site is just one example of failures in the DWPs partnership with the private sector which has led MPs on the public accounts committee to warn that the entire department is on the verge of meltdown.
  21. Hi I was hoping to get some advice on what to do about my debt. I have: Card 1 £6200 Card 2 £4900 Card 3 £790 Overdraft £2500 Loan 1 £2310 Loan 2 £4500 Total: £21200 I can afford £500 per month towards the debt and have not missed any payments. However, the interest and overdraft charges are taking the minimum payments above what I can afford. How can I sort this mess out? Would I need to write to each creditor to attempt to freeze interest and charges? Any help appreciated.

  23. My wife received a fashion catalogue from Afibel Ltd last November promising a luxury coat allegedly worth approx. £80 in return for an order over a certain minimal value. The ordered goods arrived after an extended interval and only after several premium-rate progress enquiry phone calls. However since then we have been fobbed off and downright lied to as to when the coat might be coming. First we had to wait for a claim form (which never came), then we had to write a letter to say we never received the form, then we had to wait for the end of the promotion (31st January), now we are told that they have no idea when the coat will come as it will be despatched by their French parent company. In the meantime we have had a series of catalogues of the Damart / Readers Digest type - each offering a ludicrously expensive free gift in return for a very small order. The most incredible of these came yesterday, offering a Singer Sewing Machine worth £179.99 in return for a modest order. My wife has today posted a letter given them a 14 day ultimatum to deliver the coat, with failure to do so resulting in the seeking of Trading Standards and Media assistance. Have any other forum members had similar problems with this company?
  24. I received a ParkingEye Parking Charge Notice for £100. I had stopped my car on the corner of the central parking area at the Royal Free, and was waiting in it, engine running, while my friend went to drop something in to one of the wards. This took 16 minutes in total. I had not noticed any signs saying no waiting. However, I saw subsequently no waiting signs at the 'set down zone' which appears to be the area by the wall of the hospital, and marked with diagonal lines. I was not parked in a space, was not blocking a space, and was not preventing any vehicle from passing me. I wrote a letter, but received a letter saying I didn't purchase a valid ticket etc. Then I wrote another letter saying I was not 'parked' but sitting in the car, etc. I just received another letter saying my appeal was unsuccessful 'due to the fact that the car park is a 'Pay & Display'/Paid Parking' car park only'. I telephoned and was told that it is private land and I was not allowed to wait. Is it worth appealing to POPLA? The letter says that if I lose I will have to pay the full amount rather than the reduced one. Your advice appreciated, as I have been reading previous posts but still not certain of best course.
