probably should just be £30 - I had b&q try do that to me with some timber, scan the barcode that was on all 4 of a bound lot of timber 4 times, making it significantly more than buying each piece individually. After a bit of pointing out the obvious they finally agreed.

The thing is thoug they don't have to accept your custom and if they wish can charge whatever they like, although misleading pricing can get them into a bit of trouble.

It does sound very suspicious. They appear to have a website (assuming it's the same T.J. Hughes) - are the products listed on there as that might give you the answer?

If in doubt read the

FAQs

If still in doubt - ask!

i know that if the incorrect price is shown on an item then the cashier should charge you that price ( if it's lower ), as far as i know.

but sometimes barcodes for example can be misleading, and if they scan that and it confirms correct item, wrong box etc then i think that may alter it a little ( i will check this with my partner who works in customer service at a main hardware store and post findings as and when discovered ).

if the box said x2 then obviously there should have been two of its contents, ( take a look closer at the box or any internal paperwork because this sometimes states "contents included are..... "and it will tell you how many were in.

i think thats a ridiculous statement saying they have to scan the box twice. never heard of that one before.

Please note that although my advice is offered, you should consult your legal representative before taking ANY action.

have a nice day !!

They don't legally have to sell you it at the lower price put most tend to as a "token of good will" they can actually remove all the affected stock off display. Then return later at the right price.

just confirmed with partner.

if box states x2 on it then that relates to the contents ( obviously ).

the part about paying at lower price is that stores should honour the lower price if the item in the box is what the bar code states.

hope that clarifies it.....

As Barbs said, they don't have to sell it at the lower price as the price is merely what's known as an "invitation to treat" and does not form part of the contract until you make an offer to buy it at that price. At that stage the trader can still refuse your offer to buy. Many will allow it through goodwilll (unless it's a major mistake!) but they legally are not obliged to.

This post is very odd though, I have never known any store to scan a barcode twice and that doesn't seem to make sense!

Please note I'm not insured in this capacity, so if you need to, do get official legal advice.

No store has to sell at the price marked - although many will as a gesture of goodwill.

The marked price is an 'offer to treat' and niether the store nor the intending purchaser is obliged to enter into the contract to sell.

If the price is marked wrongly, then there may be a criminal offence being committed, but this would be for prosecution and would not guarantee a sale at the marked price.

I know the stools that you are speaking of.

In January I went into my local TJs and was met with the same problem and confusion.

They had some fold up ones as well as the ones you mention.

I recall that they had an offer on them if you bought 2 (think yo saved a tenner)...I have been racking my brains here but I am pretty sure they were 30.00 each or 2 for 50.00 or something like this.I only wanted 1 though and they did not have the colour.

Ended up going to Wilkinsons and buying one there ...exactly same reduced from 39,99 to 25.99.

I remember thinking at the time.....Tjs merchandising was pretty much wide open for questions.and I imagine that many of the staff there have not got a clue about the implications that can follow by their faliures to know the rules.

Worth mentioning that a lot of chinese packaging has an outer box with a barcode and maybe 2 inner boxes where there may be 2 units each with individual bar codes on them.

I know of someone who bought a set of luggage cases from them....they scanned the outer case and it came up as 1 unit (despite having 4 other cases inside).......needless to say they ended up with a real bargain so its obviously something TjSs have problems with.
