I got a letter telling me Scottish power wanted to do a meter inspection which they did,

they said my meter had been tampered with and they replaced it.

I have now got a bill in from them for £496 for the cost of replacing meter but no other charges.

Have phoned citizens advice etc and they contacted SP

Got a phone call from SP today saying that as the meter is in my name it was me that gets the charge.

I am renting from the council and it must have been tampered with by previous occupants as i have never touched it

,i wouldn't know where to start.

I don't know what i can do now

SP said they will put the charge onto my meter.

I wouldnt instigate court proceedings at your own expense, let them do that if they so wish, they would have to prove you had tampered with it.

Hi

Now you mention Scottish Powers Letter demanding £496 for changing the meter.

1. Does the letter specifically mention a reason other than changing the meter?

2. Does the letter make any reference to any "Acts" at all?

3. Is the meter normal meter or pre payment meter?

Now write to the council housing and ask for a copy of the electrical inspection report carried out before you actually moved into the property (took up tenancy).

You also need to challenge this and ensure that Scottish Power Do Not destroy that meter (if it is the actual meter that's been tampered with as you havent been given the opportunity to have an independent inspection of the meter done if required).

What exactly is their evidence bar this letter.
