Has this exemption always been in place ?

 

 

Exemptions if you’re disabled

 

You may not have to pay the charge if you don’t pay vehicle tax because you’re disabled.

 

You’ll still have to pay if:

you have a Blue Badge but aren’t exempt from paying vehicle tax

you travel in a vehicle that isn’t exempt

 

You don’t need to do anything to get the exemption. Your vehicle details will be checked with DVLA when crossings are made in your vehicle.

When saying vehicle tax are you referring to Road Fund Licence or tax on cars?

If the car has disabled taxation class then yes the exemption has been there since I can remember. You just showed your tax disc to the attendant at the toll.

If the vehicle's taxation class is exempt from paying Road Tax then the crossing is free, their ANPR cameras will cross reference the DVLA database. Similar rules apply for some other crossings or toll roads.
