I checked my credit file with Noddle today and there's a default on there that doesn't show up with any of the other credit reference agencies.

It's on a old address, and from British Gas and the default is dated in November 2009.

It's weird that it's from British Gas as I usually go with the cheapest provider, and it's never them! I certainly haven't received a default notice from or demand for payment. It's only for a small amount (£150), and had I have known I wouldn't have let it default.

How can I get this taken off my credit file? I really want it removed as quickly as possible. If paying it off would remove the default then I probably would, just for a simple life, but as I understand it this won't help much as it'll still stay on the file. Is it okay to email them, or do I need to send everything by recorded post?

Thanks, I've done that. They say it'll take 28 days.

Should I send £10 and a Subject Access Request to British Gas asking for any details they hold about me? Are there any templates available for this sort of thing? (I want to make clear that I'm not acknowledging the debt and that the £10 is only used as payment for the data request and not any payment for any debts they allege I owe them)

HOLD ON::

Have you never been a customer of BG?

Personally would be writing to the Data Controller at BG (Not admitting Liability of Course) sending a copy of the credit file entry

ask for an explanation of this entry.

The letter just needs to have the statement " I do Not acknowledge any debt to British Gas" saves a tenner, get proof of posting.

Any Letters I Draft are N0T approved by CAG and no personal liability is accepted.
