Can anyone explain in relatively simple terms the status of a doctor who is registered with GMC and has a licence to practise but is not on the specialist or gp registers?

Possible academic, or working in research, it is the qualifications that are important.

e.g. MB. Bachelor of Medicine, BS. Bachelor of Surgery the basic qualifications in the UK.

MRCP, MRCS Member of The Royal College Of Physicians or Surgeon, FRCP & FRCS Fellows of the Royal Colleges, Fellowship in Surgery is a higher qualification.

Some may have a Ph.D, Doctor of Philosophy in a speciality, or in Certain Med Schools one may work towards the qualifications of MD or DM Doctor of Medicine in the UK these are higher qualifications, not as the generality MD used for all doctors in the US.

There are various speciality qualifications DRCOG Obs & Gynae, DA anaesthetics and quite a few more.

It seems her only qualification is an unspecified medical degree from and Eastern European country from 1998. She has been registered in the UK since 2007 and is not working in research or anything similar.

Is the person practicing medicine in any regulated discipline?

She works for ATOS, or did until very recently.

Why does this not surprise me, for this type of work she would not need to be on the GP and/or specialist registers.

Probably works part time only.

If there are concerns in regard to professional competence complain first to her employer and then to the GMC.

From my vast experience of watching Holby City, I'm putting her in the 'F2' box cos she doesn't seem to have got any further up the ladder.

I have already complained to ATOS, complaint to DWP currently ongoing, when that's done if there's still the slightest doubt over her honesty, GMC is the next stop.

Most doctors who are registered to practise with a licence aren't specialists or GPs. When a doctor qualifies they have provisional registration (foundation year 1) and enter FY2 and full registration thereafter. Most doctors will then undertake their specialist training - whether medicine, surgery, GP etc. only upon completion of the certificate of completion oif training is a doctor added to the specialist/GP registers.

They are fully qualified doctors but unable to call themselves a consultant or GP.
