Not really dangerous, but if you suspect you have a virus on the system, it is recommended to disable it, as some malicious software will hide in system restore. So even if it is found by a virus scanner, it will simply reappear a few days later. I've seen way too many instances of that in my career.

Any advice i give is my own and is based solely on personal experience. If in any doubt about a situation , please contact a certified legal representative or debt counsellor..

You can re-enable it once you have finished your scans.

What may have happened is somehow your mothers PC associates .lnk files with media player (not .exe files as listed above... unless you were definitely clicking on .exe files... mostly on the desktop the files are shortcuts rather than the actual program). If you have resolved this do a system restore to a time when the computer was running fine.

I think there is a chance that this is user error, also a chance that this is a virus, so make sure antivirus is up to date, run a full scan.

If issues persist, Windows 7 machines are usually f8 at boot, select "repair my computer" and follow the menu from there to do a factory restore.

If in doubt, contact a qualified insured legal professional (or my wife... she knows EVERYTHING)
