I was stopped on the 28th/07/2012 by a van of police officer, all white males i might add, i was taking a family friends car to my address as she was going on holiday and left the car in my care while she was away,' i honestly believe i was racially profiled', while driving i can blatantly see the officer set eyes upon me and decided to follow me but they didn't stop me straight away,

from my comprehension they were doing police computer checks on me, they followed for a while and must have realised that the car has not been reported stolen and has tax, insurance on the car! but they made a decision to stop me anyways, i protested im being stopped under duress but from nowhere the officer got really heavy handed so i complied with there unreasonable demands while they got me out of the car and into there van and proceeded to ask all sorts of stupid question that doesn't relate to the matter of why did they stop me in the first place.

they never answered my question and told me that the car will be impounded and i will have to foot the costs in order to get the car out of a forensic police car pound. after many troubles in order to get the car out of the pound after about a week going back and forth from the car pound i ended up paying over 400.00 pounds and finally got the car back as it wasn't mines. and taught that was it, now i didnt realise that on the 25/02/2013 i was being convicted for IN10 on the 28/07/2012 which is for driving without insurance, as i've moved address between the dates stated above

i didn't received any summons so was unaware of the proceeding carried out by the court concerned, it is not difficult to imagine how ****ed i was when i learnt that this situation has lead to me having 6 points on my licence , and only learned this as i'm applying to become a bus driver. this at present is highly annoying and i would be very appreciative for any help on this matter, because i'm trying to prepare to go to court to make a statutory declaration regarding my situation. thanks in advance

So it was nothing to do with racism but a check on the car showed you had no insurance and so were stopped. The questions might have seemed silly to you, but no insurance and your name not on the log book could mean you had stolen the car.

The only out would be that you 'did' have insurance and can prove it.

Hi,

You don't make it clear if you were insured or not. If you were this will be straightforward. If not then you've no argument. Are you male? more likely they stopped you if car showed up as registered to your female friend or had "female touches" pink dice or whatever.

If you feel the initial stop was for race reasons (very unlikely) and you were subsequently found to be uninsured, that wouldn't get you off with the offence.

If you get the details of the officer who gave you the ticket you can go to police and speak with his superior officer and ask why the stop was carried out. If you are not given a reasonable answer then you should lodge a complaint as racism is wrong.

As for the insurance, either get a copy of paperwork to prove you had it, (valid certificate from the date or something from insuranbce company, or if you didn't have it, learn a lesson.

Glad to hear it!

Your initial post wasn't clear as to wether you were insured or thought you should get away with the offence because you felt racially profiled. The race topic is a complicated one in this situation. I don't know your ethnicity or name, but if a car belonging/registered/insured to a person with an obviously middle eastern name, or oriental name etc was being driven by a spotty 18 yo white male in trackies, you'd want that same officer to stop them based on the fact they didn't fit the expected profile.

I still feel (more so since your were legal) you should go talk to this officers sargeant/inspector. Be polite, express your concerns and accept his explanation. If you phone the police, ask who is the officers superior, ask for them to contact you as you feel you were mistreated and wish to discuss the matter rather than make an official complaint then they are usually prompt in making contact with you.

but, as I've said, it is reasonable if they stopped you because your a male driving a females car and in that case you should thank him/her for their time and for listening to and allaying your concerns. Good luck!
