Hi All,

I've recently been signed off by my Doctor with Severe Depression and Anxiety and also waiting for a Psychiatric Assessment for possible Bipolar Disorder. I have been signing on (contribution based JSA).

I have now moved over to Contribution based Employment Support Allowance and waiting for the claim to become active. One of my friends told me recently, because I'm having real problems with going out and memory problems, I dare not cook a meal without my partner in attendance in case I set the place on fire, I could be able to claim Disabled Living Allowance on a temporary basis.

Is this right and if so, how do I go forward with the claim? Has anyone else heard of cases of mental illness making you eligible for DLA?

Many thanks for your help,

Phil

To claim DLA, (this is being phased out from April) you have to have care and /or mobility needs which have lasted for at least 3 months and will last for another 6. You can claim the lower rate care component if you can't cook a meal. When they say "cook a meal", it's not a microwave meal - it's chopping, peeling, boiling some water, etc.

if you want to make an application for DLA you can call them up and get an application sent to you in the post or you can go online and print an application off (this i find is quicker).

you can get DLA for mental health problems i know people who have this but what you must be aware of the fact its not what metal problems you have its how they effect you on a daily basis.

you can apply now or you can wait for your assessment as it would be best sending in as much evidence as you can to support your claim i.e medication , diagnosis etc etc

hope this helps
