i got a phone call from Virgin Media last week wanting me to upgrade to 30mb.

for this i'd pay an extra £4 per month and i'd pay for the new hub [or whatever it's called] but can't remember the price for that.

they said something about being on "10mb uplift" so i don't actually get 10mb.

wtf? 10mb is what i thought i was paying for!

i read something ages ago saying Virgin Media had announced it was offering a free upgrade to all its customers who use 10Mb, up to 20Mb and up to 50Mb services.

so how come it's not free?

can someone explain all this stuff to me?

Virgin BB is delivered via theior Fibre optic network and unlike many other IPS's it often is the speed they quote, I often do test on my 10mb and get results in the 9mb range so not bad at all, and this was originally a 2mb connection upgraded to 10mb for free.

Virgin do have an ADSL Broadband service as well, so just because you're with Virgin doesn't necessarily mean you are on Fibre Optic.

If they're offering their new hub however, I believe that only works with their Fibre Optic Service. Speedtest.net is a good site to use to check your speed, though when using any webpage based checker, you need to make sure that no other devices are connected to the network at the time of the test. If another laptop/computer/games console is connected then the test you run may give a slower speed than you're actually getting.

As MaxxPower above Virgin also supply ADSL that is why I asked the question, although as Geriann is from Peterborough it is more than Likely Fibre optic unless it is out in a village near to Peterborough, then it will be ADSL

Yes..this is true..then of course you are at the mercy of slow copper connections, etc..like most other ISP's
