Which benefit to claim?

My friend was disgnosed with an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm for the last few years. It has been closely monitored and it has now reached the size of 5.5cms which means he is no longer able to do his driving job. He has been self employed contracted out to do the work for a delivery company.

 

Should he claims JSA or ESA?

 

He is trying to convince the hospital to do the repair surgery on him at which point he would be allowed to go back to driving.

Depends. Is he just unfit for his driving job, or unfit for any job?

 

If it's the former, it's JSA. If it's the latter, it's ESA.

 

If he is going to go through surgery to enable him to return to work, he should claim ESA as being self employed he won't be eligible for SSP.

Accoreding to GPNotebook.co.uk it says that

 

Group 2 entitlement:

• disqualifies if the aortic diameter > 5.5cms. Relicensing may be possible after satisfactory medical. or surgical treatment. For abdominal aortic aneurysm the exercise test requirement must be met

So it souds like with surgical treatment he should be able to go back to driving a van.

It will also depend on if the Consultant or GP is prepared to issue your friend wit a fit note to say he is incapable of work or he is capable to work but woth restrictions.
