hard to say,it could be a number of things,i take it that antivirus software is up to date .first i would try running.

http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?tag=mncol;1

and see if that turns up any problems.

a six month mcafee trial can be downloaded from here too.

to be honest there's nearly always a mcafee trial running,i format my pc every few months when it becomes slow, sign up for another email address and download the sometimes same trial thats running for another 6-12 months, this gives you a firewall also.disks can be bought cheaply on ebay also for 12 months if wanted.

this combined with malwarebytes which is free if you run occasionally the updates and manually scan covers all needs'.

I think perhaps more info is needed, wiped clean ?. what does this mean ? It is very unlikley that huge chunks would just dispear, sound more like a HD problem, did you have any anti-virus,?. as suggested above, Avast is prob the best freebie.

Do a hard disk scan as you might have a faulty hard drive with bad sectors, or could be a virus
