Sorry DX, I have just plugged a HDMI cable into the laptop and the other end into the HDMI input on the TV. I want to watch videos from You Tube8-) on the TV. The picture is there (on the TV), but the audio is still coming out of the laptop. I have a VGA cable and audio lead for my own, but this is a relatives with HDMI capability. I thought a HDMI cable was capable of transferring the audio as well as the picture.

rarely on laptops

typically only picture o/p

Yeah. I think you're right DX. I was hoping it would be the same as the Xbox 360 were everything goes through HDMI.

Thanks anyway.

It does depend on the model of laptop. I've recently just repaired a Dell Studio and have used it to show both HD and Youtube on it with an HDMI cable. Dell actually provide software for it. As DX has said check the manual.

If you double click on the speaker icon and open the sound mixer you should find an option for the HDMI and it will be switched off switch it on by clicking on it and you should be ok. It is an operating system setup and nothing to do with the laptop

Nope. Sorry, that doesn't even give me an option for HDMI. It's Windows (crappy) Vista. Don't know wether that makes a difference at all, but it's the same on Win 7 (no option for HDMI).

Hi, it’s not so straight forward to set up the HDMI for sound as it has to come from the graphics card but it is quite easy to do, I can’t quite remember how I did it in Vista (or how anybody managed to do anything with it LOL) but for step by step instructions go to Google and search “HDMI sound output through vista” that should get you sorted.

I had similar problems (different hardware / xp).

I had to make sure that all drivers were installed in the correct order & the correct output selected (ie hdmi out) in the sound icon in control panel

My video driver was also in the loop somewhere, the sound has to go through the video hardware as well as sound hardware (might all be integrated anyway)
