So around August time and with the football season nearing, I decided to put Sky Sports back on so haggled with Sky about a deal.

At the moment I was paying for the basic package (£19), so I got a deal where I got the SS package for an extra £10 and I had ESPN for free for three months and I'd have to ring up in October to get it extended for another 3 months.

So rang them up few days ago only for them to say that the ESPN was in a one year contract! I couldn't believe what was said because I clearly remember that the guy said the it was free for 3 months, he made no mention of a contract for 12 months otherwise I wouldn't have taken up the channel!

So, at the moment, I was told the call would be listened to and am awaiting a reply. So what would be the next step if they return saying the contract stands? Write a letter? Request the call?

Also, my monthly payments should be £29 but my monthly billing being debited is about £79?! Is that the ESPN payments?

Anyone help, be hugely appreciated.

Cheers

:-)

Hi journal

Normally when they have these promotions theres a trial period. What you need to do is track down any literature regarding the promotion. It normally says that you can cancel within the three months.

http://www.sky-plus.info/latest-sky-plus-deals-offers/sky-tv-offer-months-free-espn-espn-hd/

I've read lots of Offer sites, to me it sounds like it's added to the extra £10 deal, so you get ESPN free for 3 months.

After 3 months it's up to you if you want it.

This is what someone else was told.

'I phoned up to subscribe to ESPN (I'd heard about the 3 months free deal) the advisor hadn't heard of any such deal, but she consulted a supervisor and did the deal. She didn't mention anything about a 12 month contract as I was expecting, in fact she even said if I cancelled 31 days before the end of the 3 month free deal I'd pay nothing'

I think you need to send a letter telling them exactly what was said to you and that you are cancelling the 3 month offer as

you were not given the relevant information. Send it recorded. Write CC: Trading Standards, xxxxxxx, xxxxxxx, xxxxx

xxxx, xxxxx, xxxxx = the address of your local office.

ESPN was available to existing customers free for 3 months as long as they agreed to subscribe and pay for another 9 months after that.

If you are adament that these conditions were not stated to you, you have done the right thing and they should be able to trace the call. If you have not received anything back within 7 days then make a complaint online via their website under miselling and request that the call be listened too and your account amended accordingly.

The part in bold wasn't mentioned to me at all because had that been the case, I wouldn't have agreed to it. He said, we'll give it you for three months now and then in October, give us a call and we'll either extend it for three months or you can cancel it and I was planning to do the latter. I'll be making a complaint via the website on Saturday if I've had no response.

Would I have to register on the site? And also, the second post suggested copying in Trading Standards, should I send a letter to Sky/TS?

Anybody give me a bullet point list of action please. Never done this kinda thing before as never had any issues with Sky.

At this stage you can go to the complainst email on the website and just keep it short and to the point,

just request that the call be listended to as you never agreed to subscribe to ESPN for 12 months and it was only 3months the advisor had stated through out the call and that you want this cancelled with no charge/refund

  • 4 weeks later...

Hey folks, just to give a quick update.

Had this annoyingly infuriating situation where I've been told by Sky that will listen to the call and call me back and never have. Although for some weird reason, they ring me on my landline when continually I've told them to call me on my mobile.

I've sent a complaints email to them today and depending on a quick response, I'll be forwarding a complaints letter through the post to Sky and copy in Trading Standards. In sending a letter to the latter, would I need to edit anything of my original letter to Sky?

And how long will it take for Sky to respond to me to the email I've sent them.

Thanks

:)

Hey, had a feeble response from Sky so wanting advice on what the next step should be, here's the email reply I got:

Thank you for your email about your ESPN special offer.

I would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to you regarding this matter.

On checking your account I can see that the ESPN was cancelled immediatly on 26/10/10 so there is no need for me to do this.

Considering the circumstances we have refunded £9.00 to your bank account as a good will gesture to cover the October payment for the channel. This will be in your bank account on or just after 13/11/10.

Going forward any further cancellations or downgrades on your Sky account will require 31 days notice to be applied.

I hope this helps with your enquiry.

Now, this email doesn't clarify what happened to the call listening, so doesn't say anything on misselling and £9 to my bank account as a "goodwill gesture" suggests they don't feel they have done anything wrong.

Any tips?

what else it you want?

thay have cancelled it and refunded 1 month - whether they acknowlege it as a mistake or not will not make any difference to your outcome
