Not a lot we didnt know already.

Its not rocket science to assume Councils would be looking to increase charges to make up shortfalls in Government caps.My own Council is losing £5 million.

I was thinking of doing a FOI request to see if the money DOES actually go towards improving roads.

Councils will prob put up Council tax rates to offset any losses.

Theres also prob some contractual issues they will be needing to sort out with enforcement parties.

Dont suppose people will be losing too much sleep over them losing the rights to print money.

Problem is that this has been anticipated for a long time and already we have seen some of the clamping outfits looking at other ways to fleece the motorists.

Just goes to show how out of touch with reality the govt. are! Whilst I don't agree with the actions of some dubious clamping companies landowners need some form of redress for vehicular trespass and failure to pay for parking. Unless they are going to ban any form of 'paid for' parking its going to lead to chaos. Why would anyone pay for on or off street parking if they can just drive into the nearest hospital, business, block of flats, store or any other type of parking and leave the car all day free with no form of redress? Residents near my local shopping centre often come home to find cars in their drive because people have parked and gone shopping or to the local mosque so politeness and honesty cannot be relied on to ensure people park properly. Once it became law and common knowledge that vehicles could not be touched or 'fined' the situation would be far worse. Whilst I'm sure that many members look on this as good news it will not be those that end up with rail commuters parked in their off street parking bay or hospital vistors forced to use on street pay and display because the hospital car park is full of local office workers cars.

I am extremely doubtful that such parking takes place like you describe G&M.

I agree with DBC that having had it in Scotland for a few years, why haven't we heard about the anachy that you are expecting to ensue?

In Scotland there isn't really the same demand for parking as there is elsewhere and I can assure you people do park on private property including private drives to avoid paying because they know nothing will happen. Do you really think people are going to pay up to £20 a day to park in Central London if they can just park in an office or hospital car park without consequence?

Office or hospital, yes. I do not believe people randomly park on private drives to houses then go to work all day expecting to retrieve their car, undamaged from said drive at 5pm.

I would imagine, if someone had parked like that, that it would be difficult for the home owner to get their cycle or pushchair etc past the trespassing vehicle without inadvertantly running the cycle/pushchair right along teh entire length of the vehicle. ;)

Oh Yes, that "how would you like it if somebody parked on your driveway? chestnut. Clampers and PPCs always dig that up when trying to defend their industry.

Fine you can call me a liar if you wish but I have personal experience of this happening at least half a dozen times, I never said all day I said people did it to go shopping or visit a mosque, the last time it was someone who had gone to collect a child from a local school and had parked in someones front garden.

How would you like it if you owned a small pub and relied on passing trade that could pull in to your car park but now found it full of non customers and there was nothing you could do? I don't agree with some of the tactics used by clampers but making it as good as legal to park your car where ever you liked with the land owner having no form of redress is stupid. Some baliffs are a bit dodgy maybe it should be made illegal to collect any type of debts or fines because obviously no one would take advantage and never pay their debts would they?

No, it shows how out of touch you in Local Government are.

In the recent public consultation on private clamping by the last government, banning it altogether was the most popular choice, even though it wasn't offered as an option in the consultation. Some faceless Ministry spokesman then dismissed it with the "landowners must have the right to protect their property" platitude, despite the fact that the Scottish Courts have declared it a form of extortion, and its subsequent withdrawal north of Hadrian's Wall hasn't caused any earthquakes.

I'm liking this Coalition more and more: unnecessary public servants, speed cameras, and now private clamping all seem to be heading for the chop.

Fine. Allow clamping with a maximum release fee of £30.

Job done.

I wonder who replied to the consultation it wouldn't be those that had been clamped by any chance would it? The vast majority of people have never been clamped and never will be so are hardly going to waste time replying to an online consultation paper. Making promises that sound good on paper is easy, putting it into practice is not that simple ask Boris about his plans to scrap the congestion charge western extension before 2010!!

Exactly....regulation would be far better than just banning it.

I agree with both posts.

Unfurtunately how long would it take to spiral out control again. Some company's will still find a loophole to make easy cash.

As for parking were I am most streets are residental parking only, CEO's are regular. Residents have paid to park in street so I agree with CEO's up and down. The road my driveway is on is not res/parking, no one parked driveway yet but plenty park across it, even when it's in use I also paid to have kerb lowered for driveway, stupidly paid for "H" Bracket but the CEO's cannot enforce the "H" Bracket or ticket offender's who park across it(thats the stupid part a waste of money). It is still down to me to contact Police for all enforcement.

Whitout the driveway I would be entitled to a disabled parking bay which the CEO's can enforce.
