My son recently passed his driving test, and I have a Motability car (I am the main driver).

Is it allowed under the scheme to insure a 17 year old full license holder as the third named driver?

The website seems to give conflicting answers, with RSA saying you need to have held a license for 1 year whereas Motability says it is allowed.

Has anyone here went through this, with any idea of the cost aswell?

Help is appreciated :)

I can't help with the young driver issue but, when my mum got her last motability car (in 2009) they wanted £300 for me to be added as 3rd driver on the insurance - I'm almost 40 and have held a licence for 15+ years.

there only rare occasions where 17 year old will be put on as a driver, as for being 3rd driver under normal circumstances it will attract a additional fee, as reported above,

if you have asked them already and they have already said min 1 year etc, their decission is normally final, unless you can make a case for special circumstances

It may be possible and seems to depend on the car.

My sibling was insured on my dads vehicle (focus 1.8) when 19.

He was however refused on the car before then (Focus C-Max 2.0) the reason being that the insurance group was too high.

I do believe that the motability people said there was a list available showing which cars could be insured by which age groups... I may be wrong on that.

I will move this thread over to the disability section, there is a lot more advice in there. :)

  • 3 months later...

As long as they have a full licence, they can be on the insurance as long as the other driver is over 21.

The Contract hire scheme insurance allows for only one driver aged below 21, and unless they are the customer, they must hold a full driving licence.
