Phoned Saga today to arrange insurance for a dealers demonstrator. (don't trust dealer) They said they could not do this as I was not the owner / registered keeper and had no financial interest in the motor. I let the Saga clone ramble on a bit, then said my own car may be kept by the dealer for repair. AHH, then it will be a courtsey car you get from the dealer sir, in that case we can insure the loaned car for you. Now, apart from the ever increasing mis use of the english language, can anyone tell me the difference between a demonstrator and a coutresy car? I own neither, nor do i have a financial interest in either.

Many large dealers have cars registered in their own name, which are loaned to customers either as a courtesy, or if they think you are genuinely interested in buying that model, a car to conduct a prolonged test drive. Surely, a loan is a loan irrespective of the circumstances.

So much for being honest and up front. I shall know better next time.

Been with SAGA for years, but shall shop around at renewal time.

SAGA isn't the company it once was especially since the bean counters took over

They kept sending me insurance offers claiming that because of my age it would be much cheaper than anyone else. I finally asked for a quote & it was 1/3rd more than my present insurer so I bin their offers without even opening them

SAGA are correct.

A motor dealer has insurance in force on demonstrators for test drives, whilst on the test drive you have no insurable interest in the car and there is cover for you to drive it.

However, a courtesy car, loan car, or hire car may NOT have cover in place, then (and only then) do you have an insurable interest and then SAGA will arrange temporary or short term cover, usually by effecting a temporary change of vehicle to your policy.

Just out of interest, if you are taking a car on a test drive (ie the demonstrator), why do you not trust the dealers insurance policy?

(SAGA are actually looking after your interests and not trying to sell you something you don't need)

Also check your own existing insurance policy, as you may be covered to drive other cars with 3rd party cover. As Mossy said you should not need this (as demonstrators will have fleet cover in place to allow for test drives), but if you really are worried in case they are dodgy then you might be able to cover yourself with that.
