Firefox keeps finding instabilities with Java add ons and I am wondering if there is a safer alternative to it.

It does use a lot out of your system resources when in use.

Or maybe it's just picking up false negatives. If you run a scan with Secunia PSI, it always says that there is a problem (potential virus) with the Java software. Although it doesn't seem to cause any problems to the system.

If all else fails, kick them where it hurts and SOD'EM;)

Rather than hunting for an alternative, I'd be more curious to know what these instabilities are and exactly how they manifest. I've yet to see any problems with FireFox and Java add-ons.

I just got a a message saying the an add on from Java tools has been blocked because of instability. I must admit, it has never happened before.

As for Secunia PSI, that always says that all the Java updates are unstable and then it directs you to a stable source for download. If you download and rerun Secunia PSI, you still get the same message basically sayinf that Jave is not safe for your system.

As I said, it may just be false negatives as some virus software can often do. Especially with keygens.

Most odd, and difficult to be sure without seeing more data about this problem, but it smells like a Java issue to me, rather than a FireFox one.

To be honest, you don't really need Java enabled in Firefox unless you're doing certain types of web development (this should not be confused with Javascript which is used commonly throughout the web and can be safely left running).

I'd just to go Tools, Add ons click the Plug Ins section and disable the Java one altogether. See if that fixes it and still allows you to do whatever it was you were trying to do before without further warnings.

Note that if you go and update Sun Java, it's likely to just switch it back on again in FireFox, so you may get the issue back.

Incidentally, unless you know that you have a specific need to be running Java runtime libraries on your system, there's no need to leave them starting up with Windows and you can safely disable them. Again, this will not effect webpages.

I'm not a Java developer so have it completely disabled in my system with no problems running any applications or surfing any sites.

  • 2 weeks later...

Mozilla have auto disabled Java Development Toolkit 6.0.190.4 within the latest version of the browser for security reasons. The main java program which is installed on your computer, so long as you keep it updated, is perfectly safe and you don't need to worry.

More info on this can be found here: https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/blocklist/

And the bug report on the issue can be found here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=558584
