This is a memory addressing issue, but could be set off by any number of variables.

As the first test, can you boot into Safe Mode? To do this, start the PC, then press F8 repeatedly until a black boot menu appears, then select the option that says 'Safe Mode with Networking'.

In the past, I've had this problem caused by faulty memory and by faulty CD/ROM.

What you will need to do is to start disconnecting devices then try rebooting.

When you get to memory sticks, you will need to replace with another to prove, as it won't boot up without.

If you're using any form of graphics board, test by using a bog standard VGA video card, etc.

Each time you reboot, boot into safe mode, which only loads the bare minimum drivers etc.

You may not have changed anything but that doesn't prevent a device from developing a fault.

Not unless your harddrive is faulty. That's where all your data, etc. is stored.

Hi,

Thanks, Black screen came up, selected 'safe Mode with Networking' same Blue screen with message comes up ?

This is good. Sort of. It basically indicates that it is more likely (but not definitely) to be corrupt software interacting with your hardware, rather than faulty hardware itself. Unfortunately, by software we mean Windows.

Assuming you still have your Windows CD, you can do the following:

1) Reboot the PC, then enter BIOS (this is normally either with the F2 key or the Del key as the machine is first starting).

2) BIOS's tend to slightly different, but somewhere you'll find a setting that controls the order in which devices boot up. If it's a Dell, I think the option for you is on the left, under Boot Sequence. Essentially, you're checking to see if the CD/DVD is selected to boot first, with the hard drive second. If it isn't, change it to boot from CD first, then hard drive. Fianlly, come out of BIOS, saving your changes.

3) Stick the Windows CD into the drive then reboot again. You should now get an offer to press any key to boot from CD. Do so.

4) When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below:

This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft

Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

5) To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER. Do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".

6) Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

7) Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair*

8) Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact

This process will simply reinstall the Windows operating system essential files. It won't touch any of your settings, your files or your installed applications, and will - in most cases - clear your issues.

Let us know if this works.

* If Repair is not one of the options, END setup. Then repost to let us know it wasn't an option and we'll try something else.
