My sister bought travellers cheques from this lot and was told she would get back what she paid on any unused cheques.

She returned to the shop today to redeem £400 worth of unused travellers cheques and was told it only applied to cash and they would charge £70 to cahs the cheques! Can they get away with this?

Why not just hold them until your next holiday (assuming they arent for some obscure currency like USD?:)).

Sounds dodgy but there is probably a get out clause for them somewhere?

The other practice that gets my goat is people who advertise they dont charge a commission BUT when you look at the difference between their buy and sell rates, well, Id rather they DID charge me a commission!

If these are American EXpress cheques then visit this link:

I tried London and it seems to recommend Post Offices as being fee free? I would expect that any Amex office would also do this for free. You should expect to pay commission for currency conversion though.
