If I was to buy a car on the mainland I would have to mark it for export with Swansea and then import it into Northern Ireland.

If a car was never registered in Northern Ireland but had been in the UK would it be detected in NI as untaxed if there was no UK tax on it?

Wouldn't think you'd have to import it. Its the same country (or so parliament would have you think). The DVLA handle all vehicles in the England, so Im sure they would have its details on file.

This is an issue squarely for DVLANI in Coleraine. It is NOT classed as an 'import/export' but it really is in all but name. A UK registration marked vehicle can only be registered by DVLANI if the RK has an NI postal address (with a BT postcode). Therefore, a UK registered vehicle mark with an RK in NI would not be accepted by DVLA, you would have to send the complete V5 to Coleraine.

As for it 'being detected' the original UK keeper would remain liable for it, irrespective of where the vehicle was located until the change of keeper was registered by Swansea or Coleraine.
