Hi everyone,

I am currently studying for a degree in Chicago, USA. I'm originally from Staffordshire and have been out in the states since August '08.

I have a credit card with Halifax which has an outstanding balance of 1,600 pounds. I can no longer manage to pay the interest on the card as i am no longer earning. Is there anyway i can freeze the interest or come to an agreement where i can pay off a percentage of the balance to close the account?

I have a friend studying with me who has 15,000 pounds worth of student debt back in England, which apparently gets wiped out once he has been out of the country for 5 years. Does anything like this apply to me?

This has been getting me really worried recently and i need to sort something out. What avenues can i explore? Your help and advice is much appreciated.

Cheers

Sam
