  1. Smart meters widely used in Spain can be hacked to under-report energy use, security researchers have found. Poorly protected credentials inside the devices could let attackers take control over the gadgets, warn the researchers. The utility that deployed the meters is now improving the devices' security to help protect its network. The discovery comes as one security expert warns some terror groups may attack critical infrastructure systems. Many utility companies are installing smart meters to help customers monitor and manage their power use and help them be more energy efficient. "We took them apart to see how they work," said independent researcher Javier Vidal who, with Alberto Illera, found the flaws in the smart meters. "We suspected there could be some issues with them and we wanted to check. "We feared the security would be easy to break and we confirmed that," he told the BBC. Network nodes BBC
  2. Hi, wonder if anyone can help. I parked at Asda in a different town to mine where you don't have to pay for parking to shop and I didn't realise you had to pay to park. Hold my hands up that I didn't even see the signs and I didn't get a ticket to display. My question is the ticket I was given is so scrunched up I can't even read what the fine is! Is there any come back on this? Many thanks for any feedback.
  3. Beleaguered energy customers face a £215 bill for the installation of smart meters that will only save them around 3 per cent on their average annual bill by 2030, according to the public spending watchdog. The Commons public accounts select committee estimated the smart meter rollout will cost £10.6 billion for the actual meters, with households forking out up to £11 running costs a year, plus the £215 cost of installing the meter. According to the committee, consumers will save just 2 per cent on an average annual bill of £1,328 until 2020, rising to £43 a year, or 3 per cent, by 2030. 4. After receiving Parking "fines" from private parking companies in the past (2011) I had frequently visited this site among others, where the advice was a resounding "IGNORE" I took said advice, and after around 5 letters from each, I heard nothing more from these PPCs, the "IGNORE" option certainly worked. Since then I'd been much more careful about parking, and as such haven't received any 'fines', Until now. I have just received a letter through the post from a company called smart parking demanding £40 for parking overnight (clearly not causing any loss to the company) in a parking space. I was going to completely ignore this letter as done in the past, but upon visiting here again it seems advice has changed to "Don't ignore" Can anyone explain why I can't just ignore this as usual? Surely the law hasn't changed to allow private companies to issue fines now?
  5. Hi Quick one. Received a letter a week ago saying that I had parked in Asda for too long. This is true! I thought it was 4 hours free whereas it is actually 2 - my fault. But there was nothing on the car and just got the letter through. Basically do I pay? Read lots but all seem conflicting. What do you suggest? Thanks
  6. Hi, I'm a small landlord of a shop. The shop tenant returned the keys to me Sat 5th July and told me the elec was up to date. Shop had a clear 'To Let' notice on it with my phone number. I've received no letters or any other clue something was amiss. Today, I missed a call, picked up the voicemail after work, a guy purporting to be from Opus saying they have a Warrant of Entry and they will breaking in in the next 5-10mins. I frantically called back thinking they have caused damage to my shop. They used a locksmith to get in and replace the meter with a smart meter - without my consent or knowledge. They now say I'm liable and their standing charge is a down right criminal 95p a day!!! The shop is empty and I'm advertising for new tenants. Can they just break in like that now that the shop is back with me and not the previous tenant. They have left no paperwork. They could clearly see the shop was now empty (was a sandwich shop with displays/fridge etc). I've a witness who tried to call me several times to alert me to someone trying to break into the shop. She was yelling at them to call me - she pointed them to the sign saying the shop is for 'To Let' and previous owner has ceased trading last week. She said they didn't care and only after her yelling at them did they bother to call me. Any help with this. Thanks,
  7. When I purchased a pay and display ticket today at a private car park run by Smart Parking I noticed that the ticket dispensed gave an expiry time of 1 hour 40 minutes instead of the 2 hours I had paid for. Whilst I only stayed for just over an hour I wonder how many people have been ticketed by Smart Parking for overstaying the expiry time on their ticket rather than the period they actually paid for? I have emailed Smart Parking advising them of this but as there anyone else I should inform in case people are wrongly ticketed?
  8. Hi Today I received a notice to owner from Smart parking ltd for £70 for unauthorised parking on 23/4/2014 I have several problems with this. First of all there was no ticket on my car that day when I returned to my car. Second they state that the discount period has expired although i have had no notice before today. Also I have only received this today no other letters. I have contacted manager at asda who has told me that the parking attendant wasnt there and would speak to them tomorrow and get back to me. .I wont hold my breath. He said they take photos but as I said I had no ticket on my car. Is it possible they put a ticket on my car then took photo and then removed the ticket. I shop in asda everyday as I dont do a weekly shop but I have no receipt as I don't keep receipts for food shopping. My question is how do i tackle this. All help greatly received.
  9. I parked in a parent and child bay at my Sainsburys supermarket this morning. I was with my 19 month son. I checked the sign that was convienantly at the front of my car to check the parking rules. It didn't mention anywhere the length of time customers had to park in the carpark so I assumed it was the same as my local Tesco store which is 3 hours. I went off and got some shopping and when I returned 2 hours 45 minutes later I had a ticket from smart parking stating I had over stayed, not how long by. I then scoured the carpark and found a sign stating the maximum time was 2 hours. (this is for a superstore that has a cafe, clothing, eletricals etc ) I then took a picture of the sign and noticed the following (see attached photo) "Income generated from paid parking charge notices is used to fund the motoring operation and any profits returned to Sainsburys are donated to MENCAP or other nominated charity" I have 14 days to pay a reduced charge of £30 after this time it goes up to £60. Please can anyone offer me advice as to whether I should appeal this charge? I would be most greatful for the help. Thank you
  10. Hello, I was wondering if you could help my colleagues and myself. We were all recently issued PCNs by Smart Parking for not displaying visible permits during our time in the Edinburgh College car park (They only recently went over to this new system, previously we have had no problems as it was college run). We all attend the college, but do not have permits. We are all still within the 14 day pay area and wondering what would be an appropriate course of action. The PCN is for £60, reduced to £30 if payed promptly and if not paid after the 28 days an admin charge of £40 is incurred. Just for you knowledge. If you require anymore information I will be happy to answer. Thanks in advance, Gurk

  12. My good lady was given a parking ticket for being to long in an Asda car park in Coatbridge Scotland by company called Smart Park or Park Smart, I believe this a private company and have been told to ignore this, i have since had a reminder, What shall i do next?
  13. Hi, A few months ago my other half received a parking charge from Smart Parking Ltd. I appealed it online as she was not in the country at the time of the offence (she was on holiday and I was using the car). I scanned a copy of her passport as this showed her stamps leaving the country. I never heard anything from the appeal but today received a letter from Debt Recovery Plus Ltd who now want me to pay £160. What is the best way to proceed? She is worried it will end up on her credit files so I would rather deal with it than ignore unless that is the best option? Thanks
  14. hi i received a ticket for parking on private land i received a letter from smart parking 25 th july claiming that they have had confirmation from the keeper that i was the driver at the time (completely untrue ) asking for payment i ignored the letter, then ive received 4 more that i also ignored the first was £80 then 2 for £150 then the 4th reduced to avoid court action £120 ive now received a letter today from zenith collections notice of debt recovery assignment, saying that they are now responsible for the debt and as debt recovery has been transferred to zenith at a discounted rate they are prepared to accept £80 not sure where i go with this one, any advice would be more than welcome(im in england) thanks r
  15. Hi, My colleague at work has received a parking charge notice from Smart Parking, for parking on double yellow lines at Asda whilst she went to the cashpoint. I read the forums here regularly, so understand that we may be able to successfully defend the legitimacy of their parking fee. Can anyone outline, step-by-step, the process to challenge the ticket, or is it a case of 'Ignore' until/if they move to take it to court? Edit: Just read updated advice on 'Ignore' and will pass that on.
  16. Ex Newsreader; Peter Sisson's has made the headlines regarding a ticket issued by Smart Parking when shopping at Homebase. The link to the story is here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2477165/How-Peter-Sissons-received-Homebase-apology-90-parking-ticket.html
  17. Hi guys. I'm a long time user (occasional poster) and have been daft and obtained a notice which was affixed to my car the other week. On the 18th August, I went to Lincoln and parked in a Smart car park (T/A T&C) and paid for 4 hours parking. Stupidly, I went over the 4 hours by a few minutes and as I returned to my car, saw a yellow striped plastic bag stuck to my windscreen, stating "PARKING CHARGE NOTICE.... Unauthorised Removal is an offence". I opened it and there was an invoice for £35 rising to £70 if I didn't pay within a week. Now, I know I'm at fault for going over, but surely £70 is a bit steep for 16 minutes??? I know the old advice was ignore/ignore or ignore, but have things changed? I don't want to end up being a living breathing puppet for these guys in a courtroom. Thanks in advance.
  18. Hello, I'm new to this so bear with me I've recently been contacted by mail by a company called Bank-Smart, which deals with recovering missold PPI from loans etc. I signed their authorisation document, giving them the go ahead to proceed with my claim, then things started unravelling over the past few weeks and I found out, from reading other people's stories with BS, that Bank-Smart were involved with some really shady issues where they charge ludicrous amounts of money for services they don't even provide, and that they can be nasty when people dispute the fees they are asking for... which is what is happening to me now I have contacted the ministry of justice, the trading standards, the financial ombudsman, the claims regulations, I've alerted various media organisations, such as Which? and Watchdog, and am about to go visit my local Citizens Advice Bureau for more help on the problem. Has anyone else had the misfortune of dealing with these people? I'm trying to find a way to get them off my back before they start turning nasty, as they are already talking about taking the whole thing to court etc
  19. Hello, I've just been quoted £600+ for a sam replacement, due to water ingress. It's the first time my roadster experiences the usual symptoms, lights going on and off, handbrake light going on/off whilst driving.... After doing a few research on the net, I was amazed by the amount of people experiencing leaks with their roadsters and especially ones that cause the SAM to go bust. I've even stumbled across a 60 pages long internal Smart procedure for fixing leaks on roadsters. Even though my roadster is 8 years old and has done 57,000 miles, I was not expecting the SAM unit to go so early, especially since my local dealer said it had been damaged by water! With a Full Mercedes/smart service History, I was hoping they'd fixed the leaks pro-actively !! Nonetheless, I've aked my dealer to request a contribution from Smart through the ESKULAB process. That was denied. I then call Mercedes directly, and they said "We do not recognize this as an issue for that model, else we would have organized a recall". Considering the very well known water leak issues on the Roadsters, I don't want to pay for the repairs. Would anybody know what can be done next to have Smart/Mercedes fix their flawed design at their expenses? Thanks in advance, Morgan
