After the full page article in The Scotsman (p.11) today I headed for CAG and have read postings with great interest. Whilst talking with FD on the phone this evening I asked if I could get data electronically back to 2001. 'No' was the reply, but you can get paper copies which you can then type into your spreadsheet.... and it will cost you £2.50 a (monthly) statement from 17.3.04 (furthest I can get online) back to Jan 2001 - that's £97.50.....!!!!

"Oh? I said, but don't I have access to all data about me under the Data Protection Act"

"Only what we have not given you, and we sent you statements already: it's your responsibility to keep them - you only get 'notes under the DP Act..."

"But it can't cost FD nearly £100 to print out 39 statements"

"It's a standard fee"................

So it begins!

Can anyone assure me I am in fact entitled to account content data please?

So reassuring that there are others outraged by this practice by the banks of kicking folk when they are down, charging them more than those fortune has blessed...

Data protect act - £10 maximum charge for as much paper as you like (or that they've got). Send the DPA letter from the templates folder and a cheque for £10. You'll get the lot. And that's the law...

A&L: Settled - £6,200

HFC: Settled - £800

Shell Visa: Settled - £250

Egg: Settled - £700

Mint: Settled - £1200

RBS: Settled - £850

The opionions in this post are guaranteed to conform to the laws of physics, but pretty much nothing else...

Thanks so much - why do they have to LIE about my rights?

I am going to give you guys 10% and that's a promise - doing this alone would be a non starter.

The banks seem so adept at misleading and stonewalling reasonble, just expectations of fair dealing - it's frightening!
