I am thinking of watching TV only for part of the year. If this is to be the case, what measures should I take to legally avoid not paying for the period that I won't be watching as I understand TV licensing tend to get you to pay six months in advance..

Can you obtain a card to pay at a paypoint when you need a licence ?

If this is not possible, then you might have to pay quartely for the period you need a licence and then cancel declaring that you no longer watch live TV.

They make it as difficult as possible so most just sign up to pay for a years licence.

We could do with some help from you.

I cancelled my Direct Debit after the 6th payment ( so payment for the year in full, They huffed and puffed and threatened until I told them that there was no legislation that required me to pay in advance and they would be prosecuted if they did anything silly like "Inspectors " or DECA However I did tell them about 3 months before that I would be stopping payment and would do the same again every year

Theres no legistlation or anything to force you to pay in advance. Its just a little scheme tv licencing have. Pay by DD

The initial tv licensing dd collects the full years license fee in the first 6 months by doubling your dd payment, thereafter its half the initial payment for the remaining 6 months, save as for price increases, but the remaining 6 months are advance payments towards the next years license.

So, that in mind, you would have to know which months you wanted to watch tv and which you didnt as your payments are never for that particular month of viewing anyway as the license is provide on an annual basis. this means that in the first year, say you make 2 dd payments and then cancel the dd, your license would be valid for the 4 months you have paid for. And of course you would have to cancel the license aswell after 4 months

I have been getting letters as it is and not even being liable to pay, what hassle I would get if I just paid one month in advance and as for DD, I'd rather pay one month at a time by pay point..

Nope. Has nothing to do with owning a TV. It's about using a TV to watch live broadcasts. That's why you don't have to register a TV with TV licencing anymore. People wised up to that trick

I reckon that the viewer totals for iplayer would drop substantially and the bbc will overhaul it to be a subscription based service instead
