Hi,

Not sure where to post this but I am in a jam and need help getting back on my feet.

I am 23 and for last 4 years I have moved around the country camping and surviving on busking but now I need to hang up my violin and concentrate on settling down.

My first problem is getting a care of address in the city I have decided to make my home, is it possible to use an address for benefit purposes which is located in another part of country.

If I have no proof of living anywhere for the last four years am I unlikely to get help with social housing as I have no local connection with anywhere ?

Any help or thoughts appreciated.

Contact the housing charity Shelter and i am sure they will have experience of how people handle these situations.

I believe homeless people can obtain benefits where they find themselves and register with the nearest job centre. But there will be rules regarding point of contact and you will have to be contactable where you are.

We could do with some help from you.

I'm unsure about social housing, and agree with Unclebulgaria's suggestion to contact Shelter.

Regarding benefits, you can use a "care of" address of a friend, family member or whoever you trust. However, you must be able to get their regularly to check your mail. If you don't have anyone at all in the area where you intend to settle, you could ask to the use the local Jobcentre as a mailing address - this was allowed in the past, and might still be OK today.

Thanks for the replies, I have a mobile phone so that the job centre can contact me any time and I have a friend who is willing to let me use their address as a care of address and will telephone/text me of any important mail but lives in another city, does anyone know of any reason why this might not be allowed?
