Return to sender

If I mark a junk mail envelope "return to sender" and put it in a post box does it actually get back to the sender and are they charged for the return delivery?

Theoretically, yes..but only if there is a return address on the envelope. I would also assume they would be charged for the returned post but I don't state that as fact

I save junk mail up for a week or so then put it in a plain brown envelope and address it to just one of the companies - pop in post box without stamp.

The best junk mail is the ones which come with pre-paid envelopes for you to reply to. Put junk mail from other companies into the pre-paid envelope and then post it. That way whoever the pre-paid envelope belongs to gets charged

Not if it is return to sender, they don't get charged.

 

I used to take returns on ebay like this, just ask them to mark it return to sender on low value items, never got charged. Even had a return from Poland like this and didn't get charged.

Letters returned to the sender are not charged for as long as:

 

1. The envelope has not been opened.
   
2. Royal Mail did the "final mile" delivery.
   

I came across one instance of someone sending a package back that had been delivered by Hermes. They had omitted to put any stamps on, so the company got charged for the privilege.

You can tell when an envelope is empty though and not even bother to open it. But feeling the weight of something inside that might be your completed form that came with the envelope....
