Hi

I received a letter from a County Court Bailiff called Mr Morgan. The letter says

"I am holding a very important document for your attention. You must call "

The letter then goes onto say, if you ignore this document you may be committed to prison for contempt of this court but at no point in the letter does it say what the document is.

Does anybody know if i'm obliged to respond to this? Particularly as the letter doesn't state what the document is.

An advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

My guess is it is a scare tactic. Can you post the letter up in full, including any company addresses on it, but remove personal info.

Also, have you checked with the court to see what it is about? If he is 100% a county court bailiff, then his actions could land him in deep trouble. If you have the ability to record the call, give this muppet a ring, but make sure you do not agree with anything said, especially as he has already broken OFT guidelines and therefore is risking his licence ( if he is even a bailiff). We've seen many cases of DCA's trying this tactic in the past, but it pays to be careful and sure.

Any advice i give is my own and is based solely on personal experience. If in any doubt about a situation , please contact a certified legal representative or debt counsellor..

If my advice helps you, click the star icon at the bottom of my post and feel free to say thanks

when a county court bailiff sends or leaves a letter at your address - they usually state exactly what it's all about. As suggested above, scan the letter and post on the thread (remove any personal identifying information first).

Thanks for the help guys, the Bailiff is Mr Morgan County Court Bailiff and the letter is headed with HMCS, He Majesty's Court Service. I've noticed their reference is Bury MBC which would usually refer to council tax. I pay my council tax on time by direct debit so it can't be that.

I'm going to give him a ring, it just seems a bit strange they can say you may be committed to prison without even saying what the document is

If it has Bury MBC then this sounds more like Magistrates Court. Do you have any old or recent unpaid Court fines? If for Council Tax then it would likely be for attendance at a Committal Hearing - do you owe any Council Tax?
