I work for a retailer and I am not happy with the number of late nights I am having to do. I finsih at 9:30pm I am contracted to do 2 a week and I end up doing 4. Its affecting my health as I have been diagnosed with suffering from IBS in the past 2 months and on days I do late nights, I suffer from it badly. I have done a diary and noticed my worst days are my 3rd and 4th late nights of the week.

Plus I want to join the local gym, which is closed on one of my days off. I did try to go to the gym before work and I got very tired. I will not feel the financial and physical benefits if I went to the gym once a week - plus about 10 days extra per year during annual leave.

The IBS is making my life a misery. On the odd time where I finished work at 6pm, I had a good day health wise.

Not every colleague works late nights and some cannot do so because of the timings of the buses to home and another has been divorced and got 3 kids under 8. But the rest either walk or drive to work. The manager is not distributing the late nights among the colleagues. If they refuse to work late nights, they should seek employment elsewhere where there is no such thing as late night work. Next week, there is a meal out with colleagues as 3 of them hit the same milestone birthday within 6 weeks and, even though I put my name down, and there are 8 colleagues that haven't put their names down (2 because they are on holiday), my manager insists I work that day! We only need 3 working on a late night. Surely, 3 of these colleagues can do a one off shift swap?

Though if anyone suggests I will get tired and unwell from going to the gym in the evening - but the thing is if I having a bad day, I leave the gym earlier or have a day off. But working late night, I cannot finish early.

If I continue doing these extra 1-2 late nights a week, it going to make me even more ill and may have to phone in sick if my IBS is totally unbearable.

I feel I need to write to my manager mentioning my IBS and the fact there is 100% correlation between bad days and late nights and my desire

You need to make how you feel known to the management. Put it down on paper that you have helped as much as you can even though you are contracted for only two days but you cannot continue the extra hours any longer.

I'd look at the advice your "cousin" is getting for you over on the other forum you posted this on :)

really? it's a near verbatim copy. You might want to check who your cousin is telling about your situation.
