Parking/front driveway depth restrictions

I'm new to this forum so hope I've got this right!

 

We live in a Victorian terraced house on an unclassified road. We have contacted the local council to apply to have the kerb dropped to create access to park our car off road. The parking is horrendous!

 

The council forms state that we must have 5m depth to apply. We have 4.6m. There are many other houses around the local area with dropped kerbs and off road parking with no more depth than we have.

 

Where do we stand with this? Can we appeal? Is it a case that others have changed theirs without permission and if so what are the consequences?

Have you applied and been refused? If not, and your neighbours have succeeded, I would just apply and await the outcome. If they say no, then you can consider an appeal.

No, haven't applied yet as they make it very clear that it must be at least 5m. You have to apply by completing a form which states that you confirm that there is enough depth.

Why do you need off road parking? Can you not park in the road? Are you sure you have measured correctly? It may be worth asking for the other residents to get together to apply as a road. What about how wide is the pavement that you want to block with your cars? What about pedestrians? People have to be able to walk along pavements and not have to move around your cars, you know! What about older people or disabled people? If you are going to have the council consider you having room to have your car parked off road, then it has to consider that it does not block normal access on foot on the walkways as well. There are a lot of issues, but still well worth the application.

Have any of your neighbours had it done recently? If so, why not ask them how they dealt with the 5m rule? If all the other houses have had their dropped kerbs for years and years, it may be that the council has changed the rules in the meantime.

Thanks for all your comments. Definitely won't restrict the pathway as have a 1 year old in a buggy and know how annoying it is when having to walk in the road. No one has done it recently so you're probably right about the rules changing but it's incredibly frustrating and doesn't seem very fair. Just wondered if anyone has resolved a similar problem?
