dont quite get this bedroom tax thing,i`v been trying to downsize from 3 bed to 2 bed for nearly a year with no luck, have now found a little 2 bed just round corner, and guess what the rent is only about £5 a week cheaper than the house i`v got,so how do they justify reducing my benefit by £14 a week for a extra bedroom

If you could sell the suggestion to Joe Public (working full time and paying rent as they cannot afford to buy) that those out of work should have a property purchased for them through housing benefit then fair play to you as you are obviously a better salesman than I.

instead of BTL landlords?

My point was in all likelyhood since landlords make a profit on top of mortgage payments, it probably would be cheaper to pay mortgages than to pay rents. (at least until they started using low LHA instead of proper HB).

In fact the best idea probably is for a government to buy houses on the open market for claimants to live in, there is simply no rent paid (unless claimant deemed to have excess income) and in the process the government increases their state profit portfolio, so the government gains the assets probably at cheaper cost than paying landlords. Of course there is the chance of sale values been inflated when the buyer is government, but is still probably better than paying private landlords.
